Position Overview:
The Waterloo Public Library seeks a proactive, adaptable, and patron-focused individual to join our team as a 29-hour Library Assistant. This position plays a key role in supporting daily library operations, assisting patrons with a variety of needs, and contributing to a welcoming, efficient, and dynamic public library environment.
Key Responsibilities:
● Library Service Provide excellent customer service to patrons and provide general information about library services. Use the library's management system to create and maintain patron accounts and assist with checkouts, returns, renewals, holds, and payment collection. Uphold library policies and promote library resources, programs, and services.
● Technology Support & Makerspace Assistance Help patrons use public computers, printers, photocopiers, and personal devices (phones, tablets, e-readers, etc.). May provide instruction on equipment in The Hive makerspace, including the Cricut Maker, sublimation printer, 3D printer, sewing machines, and more.
● Programming & Outreach Plan and implement library programs such as story times, book clubs, technology classes, Summer Library Program, community outreach, etc. May assist with library tours and
represent the library at local events, as needed.
● Collection Support Assist with the general upkeep of the library and its collections, such as curating and maintaining physical and digital displays, shifting and relocating materials, editing item records, etc.
● Reference & Reader's Advisory Help library patrons find the materials, information, or resources they're looking for. Provide quick, correct, and professional answers for basic to intermediate inquiries using online resources and library collections. Consult librarians on complex research questions and refer patrons to appropriate sources outside the library, as needed. Provide personalized reading, viewing, and listening recommendations.
● Adaptability & Teamwork Maintain a willingness to learn, perform well in a fast-paced environment, sustain a high level of productivity, have good professional judgment, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
● Other Duties Maintain confidentiality and follow library, city, and union policies. Interact professionally with the public and staff, and maintain composure in stressful situations. Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
● Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
● Strong oral and written communication skills
● Must be confident and capable using technology
● Multilingual ability is a plus, though not required
Other Requirements:
● With or without accommodation, ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, crouch, squat, kneel, and climb stairs, lift up to 25 pounds and push carts up to 50 pounds; ability to talk and hear in person and on phone; ability to speak distinctly
