Hawkeye Community College’s Industrial Automation Technology program is a long‑standing program preparing students for careers in manufacturing and industrial maintenance. We are seeking a student‑focused instructor with hands‑on industry experience to teach courses in this program. The role is a full‑time, nine‑month faculty position that includes a teaching load of 15 credit hours per term, instruction in face‑to‑face, online or hybrid formats, and participation in department‑level activities.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, develop, and deliver instruction in mechanical systems, pneumatic systems, industrial safety, networking, machine shop processes, robotics, hydraulic systems, and schematics.
- Prepare instructional plans, materials, and assessments aligned with curriculum goals.
- Use diverse instructional modalities and materials to meet objectives and provide progress reports.
- Maintain curriculum for assigned courses and update content with emerging industry trends.
- Establish a safe, supportive learning environment that encourages hands‑on learning and problem solving.
- Build partnerships with industry stakeholders to enhance learning opportunities and employment pathways.
- Supervise the use of lab equipment and training materials.
- Collaborate with the Dean, faculty, college divisions, advisory committees, and the community.
- Participate in campus committees and departmental committee work as assigned.
- Mentor students on technical projects and hands‑on tasks.
- Assist with student recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Adhere to industry‑standard safety protocols in all classroom and lab activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned; regular on‑campus or onsite attendance is expected.
- Associate’s Degree in Industrial Automation Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Mechanical Technology, or a closely related field.
- Five years of recent, relevant work experience in industrial automation, industrial maintenance, or manufacturing.
- Hands‑on experience in mechanical power transmission, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, or industrial robotics.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technical skills and ideas.
- Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Motivation to serve students from diverse backgrounds.
- Professional and personable interaction with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Community college or post‑secondary teaching experience.
- Experience with industrial robotics programming and integration.
- Industry‑recognized credentials such as SACA, NIMS, MSSC, or OSHA 10/30.
- Familiarity with curriculum development and integration of emerging industry trends.
Instruction occurs approximately five days per week, which may include day, evening, or weekend courses. Work is performed in office, laboratory, and classroom settings with technology. The role requires good hand‑eye coordination, visual acuity, dexterity, and the ability to sit, stand, bend, lift, and move frequently. The learning environment is an industrial laboratory where noise and mechanical equipment are common.
Employment StatusFull‑time, nine‑month contractual position with comprehensive benefits including health, dental, vision, life, LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan, holiday, personal, sick leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement options (IPERS or TIAA). Salary is based on the Hawkeye Professional Educators’ Association Master Agreement.
