The Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center is looking to hire a full‑time High School Completion Coordinator to join their team.

The Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center serves adult students who are earning a High School Equivalency Diploma, learning English, and/or receiving workforce training.

As the High School Completion (HSC) Coordinator, you will be the driving force behind a community that empowers adult learners. You will oversee the non‑credit HSC and Adult Basic Education (ABE) programming, directly supervise instructors and volunteers, and collaborate with the director and the AEL Leadership Team to plan and elevate our programs.

Essential Job Functions
  • Supervise and develop HSC and ABE programming and classes.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations of HSC and ABE classes.
  • Teach or substitute teach classes as needed (e.g., math, science, social studies, writing, reading, civics, study lab).
  • Serve a wide array of students.
  • Supervise in‑person, remote, on‑site, and off‑site classes.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, supervising, observing, and evaluating HSC, ABE, and IET instructors.
  • Serve on hiring committees for other AEL staff.
  • Provide and/or coordinate orientation, training, in‑service, and professional development for instructors and volunteers.
  • Provide technology support for instructors and students.
  • Coordinate class assignments for students and teaching assignments for staff.
  • Maintain communication with the director, instructors, staff, students, and volunteers.
  • Plan and lead weekly HSC staff meetings.
  • Continually develop and deliver HSC program student orientation.
  • Meet with parents/guardians of students under 18 years of age to ascertain the best course of action.
  • Meet with students as needed for goal setting, class placement, enrollment, and student conduct issues.
  • Collaborate with AEL Enrollment and Assessment Services staff on matters related to HSC student registration and assessment.
  • Collaborate with AEL Enrollment and Assessment Services staff to prioritize student learning, progress, and successful completion of their HSED.
  • Organize and implement an annual graduation ceremony with a team.
  • Develop teaching objectives for each core subject and level of classes.
  • Select, order, and continually develop curricular and instructional materials.
  • Identify best practices and materials to support English Language Learning students in the program.
  • Oversee maintenance of accurate records, attendance, assessments, measurable skill‑gain attainment, time and effort, and other reports as required by Iowa Workforce Development and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and college laws, policies, and standards.
  • Assist with new and existing grant applications, grant reports, and monitoring.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with the college, partner agencies, and the community to provide services and classes.
  • Collaborate with the AEL Academic Career Education Specialist in offering wrap‑around services to students.
  • Collaborate with the Transition Specialist to support student transition to postsecondary education and training.
  • Make recommendations on budgetary needs for the program.
  • Serve as a positive voice to community groups.
  • Seek opportunities for students to gain employability skills as well as employment information and assistance.
  • Collaborate with IowaWORKS to improve programming related to student employment and employability.
  • Attend meetings with community and college groups and serve on internal and external committees.
  • Serve as a member of various program teams such as Family Literacy and IET.
  • Work actively both on‑ and off‑site to improve AEL student recruitment and retention rates.
  • Participate in campus committees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on‑campus and/or on‑site attendance is considered an essential function of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field.
  • One (1) year of teaching experience in a core subject area.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, supervise, and coordinate staff.
