Job Responsibilities
  • Assists with maintaining and stocking supplies within established budget guidelines to promote cost‑effective patient care.
  • Sorts and stores incoming surgical instruments and supplies in designated locations.
  • Begins inventory on assigned shift to ensure adequate supply levels in all L&D areas.
  • Incorporates Family‑Centered Care principles into daily practice.
  • Provides care that supports birth, postpartum, and newborn care as normal life events.
  • Assists families to achieve the birthing experience and hospital stay they desire.
  • Ensures families are included in all aspects of patient care.
  • Encourages mothers to provide care to their newborns whenever possible.
  • Assembles patient charts.
  • Answers phones and greets customers courteously.
  • Maintains knowledge of and operates the infant security system.
  • Prepares materials, supplies, and equipment required for procedures to support timely case starts and complete setups.
  • Gathers and opens supplies per provider preference sheet.
  • Frequently checks patient rooms and supply areas to remove outdated supplies and restock appropriately.

    Sets up rooms and maintains aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies.
  • Assists in ensuring necessary equipment is available and functioning.
  • Supports efficient room turnovers and assists with patient care as needed.
  • Uses supplies appropriately and minimizes waste.
  • Ensures needed instruments are available based on preference cards or special requests.
  • Breaks down rooms after procedures, including waste disposal and cleaning support.
  • Cleans equipment in dirty utility as needed (e.g., IV poles if Central Supply is unavailable).
  • Transports patients to the OR per transport procedures.
  • Assists with lifting and positioning patients safely.
  • Holds extremities during procedures as directed, maintaining proper alignment.
  • Limits conversation over sterile fields in accordance with aseptic standards.
  • Assists in orientation and education of new staff.
  • Participates in purposeful rounding as needed or directed by RN.
  • Assists with newborn care (e.g., bath, BP, temperature) under RN direction.
  • Assists with adult care tasks (e.g., bathing, vitals, temperatures, blood glucose monitoring) as delegated.
  • Adjusts to changing team and patient priorities as directed by charge nurse.
  • Responds promptly to call lights.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the location, care, and operation of all surgical equipment.
  • Practices proper sterilization processes, including cleaning, packaging, and chemical/biological monitoring.
  • Prepares and reassembles special instruments for procedures.
  • Facilitates timely transfer of soiled instruments to Sterile Processing, including obtaining empty tanks when needed.
  • Maintains aseptic technique throughout procedures and identifies breaks to the surgical team.
  • Demonstrates understanding of surgical procedures, including anatomy, physiology, and instrumentation, to anticipate surgeon needs.
  • Assists with accounting for sponges, needles, and instruments according to policy.
  • Handles specimens properly to ensure safe delivery to the specimen container.
  • Assists with patient positioning and draping.
  • Scrubs for assigned surgical cases.
  • Verbalizes and demonstrates department‑specific competencies.
  • Performing tasks and using equipment appropriately for the patient’s age.
  • Communicating and collaborating in an age‑appropriate manner.
  • Attends required safety programs.
  • Consistently uses required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of departmental emergency procedures (fire, disaster, etc.).
  • Participates in required drills and meets regulatory safety standards.
  • Completes and routes incident reports promptly.
  • Operates equipment safely and reports unsafe equipment/furniture.
  • Requests assistance as needed to ensure safety.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and practices safe work habits.
Education

Requires basic reading, writing, and English communication skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, visitors, staff, and physicians. A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.

Preferred Education

High school diploma or equivalent with additional specialized training is preferred.
