Unit OverviewThe Waterloo Birth Center includes labor & delivery, postpartum care, and a Level III NICU. It is a 23 bed unit with 19 large LDRP rooms that allow families to stay in one room for the entire stay, and two OR suites for c‑sections. We are one of a few integrated neonatal intensive care units nationwide. Infants remain in the LDRP room with families, enabling family‑centered care and bonding.
As a Level III NICU we provide care to infants 28+ weeks gestation and have a transport team that assists with transfer from smaller hospitals. We have a team of OBGYN doctors and midwives, low primary c‑section rate, and high VBAC success rate.
- Provide specialized, evidence‑based, and outcome‑focused care to critically ill and premature newborns in a dynamic and supportive environment.
- Use advanced critical thinking and neonatal expertise to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care while supervising and coordinating the NICU nursing team.
- Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatric specialists, families, and other healthcare professionals to ensure clear communication and optimal outcomes.
- Conduct thorough assessments, identify patient needs, develop goal‑oriented care plans, and support neonates through critical stages of growth and development.
- Monitor and respond to complex conditions, provide family education, and adjust care plans as needed to ensure the best possible outcomes for each newborn.
- Associate degree required, BSN preferred.
- No prior experience required.
- Current Iowa RN license, BLS, Mandatory Reporter, NRP, and ALCS certification.
