Position: Clinic Registered Nurse (RN): Radiation Oncology

Position Overview

Clinic RN – Mercy One Waterloo Cancer Care – provides patient care in outpatient oncology settings and is responsible for delivering safe, effective, evidence‑based patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN coordinates care provided by other clinical staff, supports patient and family education, and ensures communication across healthcare teams while operating with minimal supervision.

Schedule
  • Full time, 32 hours a week
  • 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
  • No weekends, no holidays
General Requirements
  • Compassionate and highly skilled Radiation Oncology Nurse.
  • Assess and monitor patient health status before, during, and after radiation therapy, including symptom management and interpretation of clinical data.
  • Educate patients and families about radiation therapy procedures, potential side effects, and self‑care strategies.
  • Manage side effects such as skin reactions, fatigue, and treatment‑area discomfort by implementing evidence‑based interventions.
  • Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and families throughout the treatment process.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and nursing colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of treatment progress, symptom tracking, and patient records.
  • Coordinate imaging procedures and obtain outside images.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and radiation protection guidelines.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient education initiatives, and continuing education.
  • Integrate Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values into practice.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments (physical, psychosocial, nutritional, functional, safety, spiritual, cultural, educational).
  • Administer medications and treatments safely via multiple routes.
  • Perform nursing care, lab and diagnostic tests, specimen collection, phlebotomy, and limited radiology procedures following policies.
  • Assist providers with patient care, phone/mail/fax communications, scheduling, consents, admissions, referrals, and outpatient procedures.
  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians and staff regarding care plans and patient needs.
  • Educate patients, families, and clinical staff on treatments, medications, test preparation, discharge, and health maintenance.
  • Participate in staff meetings, committees, quality improvement, risk management, and performance improvement projects.
  • Maintain documentation accuracy and completeness in EMR.
  • Maintain and monitor supplies, equipment, medication stock, and office machines; report malfunctions.
  • Recognize and respond to urgent/emergency patient needs and initiate emergency procedures.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and Trinity Health policies.
Education
  • Active RN License in the state of Iowa (compact state license acceptable); licensure from other states may be required for location.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training within 3 months of hire.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills (Windows environment, web navigation, email, MS Office).
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people in a collaborative environment.
  • Required English proficiency for reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Completion of specialty classes or certifications required for some roles.
  • Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring, to inspire and motivate others.
