Position: District 2 Bridge Inspector 2 - Waterloo

Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation District 2 Bridge Crew in Northeast Iowa is looking to hire a Bridge Inspector 2 to lead the Bridge Crew. You will support your supervisor and team by assisting in various duties, answering questions about policy and procedures, distributing workload, checking work, supporting training efforts, and providing valuable input on personnel information.

Location

Maintenance Garage - Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from the assigned work location.

Shift

7:00 to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

Duties

As a Bridge Crew leader for the Northeast corner of Iowa, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and coordinate the work of a specialized bridge crew to ensure the safety of the traveling public
  • Oversee planning and scheduling, and provide leadership to equipment operators
  • Perform materials sampling and testing
  • Use and operate specialized highway and bridge maintenance, construction and materials equipment
  • Adhere to construction and material procedures, techniques, terminology and specifications
  • Perform operations related to snow and ice removal

Requirements
  • Must successfully complete a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards prior to appointment or within a period of time designated by the appointing authority.
  • A CDL permit upon hire.
  • Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.

Entry-level driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT. The multifaceted training will help meet all state and federal regulations.

  • A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.

  • A pre-employment drug screen and will be required to participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing programs.
  • May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.
