RLMG is seeking a visionary Producer/Director to lead the creative development of cinematic, story-driven media experiences for museums and cultural institutions. This role is first and foremost a storyteller — responsible for shaping the narrative, emotional arc, and visual language of linear films that live within immersive, spatial environments.
Working at the intersection of history, culture, and place, the Producer/Director translates complex ideas into compelling, visually driven films that resonate with public audiences. From early concept through final delivery, this role drives the creative vision — developing story frameworks, writing scripts, guiding visual strategy, and directing production to ensure each piece is cohesive, impactful, and aligned with the experiential goals of the gallery.
The Producer/Director partners closely with clients, content experts, and interdisciplinary project teams to ensure narrative clarity, historical integrity, and emotional power. In addition to creative leadership, the role carries responsibility for managing production workflows, maintaining alignment with project goals, and stewarding schedule and budget throughout the lifecycle of each film.
This position requires both artistic sensibility and disciplined execution — someone who can imagine boldly and deliver precisely.
This is a freelance position, with potential for a path towards a staff position if both parties are interested. Local candidates willing to commute to Watertown, MA on occasion/as requested is preferred;
Ability to travel as needed.
We are offering a rate of $60-80/hour, based on experience level.
Please share a link to your portfolio and a cover letter (included as one single attachment with your resume). In your cover letter, we are interested in hearing about the following:
- Describe an example of a film project where you shaped the core narrative from concept to finished product. What was the story challenge, what was your process, and how did you define the emotional arc and visual approach?
- Museums require storytelling within physical spaces. Have you created media designed specifically for a spatial or immersive environment? If so, describe how the physical setting influenced your creative decisions. If not, how would you approach storytelling differently in a museum context?
- Tell us about a time you worked with historians, cultural advisors, or community stakeholders to shape a story. How did you balance narrative clarity with needs for accuracy and cultural sensitivity?
- Describe your experience working with Indigenous communities or other culturally specific groups. How did you approach building trust, incorporating community voice, and ensuring the story was shaped with — not just about — the people represented?
- Lead the creative vision and narrative strategy for linear media installations in museum environments
- Work with client teams to understand and execute media goals
- Develop story treatments, scripts, and visual approaches rooted in research and client objectives
- Utilize published academic resources to support content and story development
- Collaborate with museum staff to identify relevant digital materials within institutional collections, and to identify community resources—including individuals, archives, libraries, universities, and media organizations—to gather relevant stories and content
- Direct on-location and studio production, including interviews and reenactments
- Shape pacing, tone, and emotional arc to create cohesive cinematic experiences within spatial exhibits
- Lead team of associate producers, editors, graphic designers, and animators as part of the media production process
- Collaborate with exhibit designers, interactive teams, and content specialists to integrate media seamlessly into physical environments
- Facilitate client workshops and creative conversations to align vision and expectations
- Oversee post-production, including editorial direction, music selection, sound design, and finishing
- Develop production plans, manage schedules, and maintain budget accountability
