Job Description

The Walker Beacon School, a private non-profit 198-day special education school serving students of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities and expressions, is seeking a High School Teacher for our Watertown Campus. Under the direction of the Admin Team, this teacher will be responsible for teaching classes of up to eight students with primary social emotional disabilities.

This teacher will develop and implement the curricula for courses that meet the Massachusetts frameworks and will have the opportunity to develop and teach innovative and unique courses.

Summary of position:
Walker Beacon School is seeking a Long-Term Substitute Special Education Teacher for their Day School program located in Watertown, MA. Under the direction of a school administrator, the Long-Term Substitute SPED Teacher will be responsible for a classroom of up to eight students with social, emotional, and learning challenges. The Long-Term Substitute SPED Teacher will implement the academic, behavioral, and social curriculum in the classroom.

Education and Licensure

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in related field; ability to attain a Waiver in MA Moderate Disabilities 5-12 licensure within first 90 days of employment in this role.

Preferred:
Master’s degree in Special Education or related field; MA licensure in Moderate Disabilities 5-12.

Ability to work and stand for extended period of time. Job may require bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting. Job requires the ability to perform therapeutic physical intervention as needed.

Essential functions:

Work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to further the emotional, behavioral, and educational development of students.

Implement sequential units of study that make learning cumulative, connect learning across disciplines, and are based on the learning standards within the curriculum frameworks.

With support from a licensed teacher, plan developmentally appropriate lessons and prepare materials necessary for daily instruction, maintaining clear, reasonable standards and expectations for students in all academic subjects.

Provide multi-sensory, multi-modal, varied opportunities for learning that are built on students’ prior knowledge and experience to build academic and social skills.

Collaborate with supervisor to provide updates about student progress, to inform their writing of progress reports and IEPs.

Maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and effectively manage the behavior of students in small and large groups.

Apply Walker’s model of childcare, including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), which focuses on verbal deescalation techniques and requires the use of physical restraint, when necessary,

Implement treatment protocol and appropriate therapeutic strategies established in student’s treatment plans, IEPs, and individual support plans.

Meet students’ physical needs and provide a safe and therapeutic environment for children.

Participate fully in the administrative functions of teaching and child care, including attending and participating in required meetings, completing assigned report writing tasks in a timely manner, and actively communicating with families and members of the…
