Water Resources Engineer – Stormwater/Water Quality

VHB's growing Watertown, MA team is looking for a water resources professional to join its dynamic team of Water Resource scientists and engineers and support our growing water quality and stormwater regulatory planning and compliance work. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a cutting edge, innovative team of multidisciplinary professionals working on water resources work such as MS4 stormwater program management, stormwater‑related policy review and guidance, integrated water resources planning, resiliency planning, watershed management and stormwater treatment planning, stormwater master planning, and Clean Water Act permitting‑related tasks.
Responsibilities- Lead tasks, including delegating to other team members, managing timelines and budgets at the task level, and monitoring progress
- Plan and coordinate field investigations including, but not limited to, stormwater system inspections, construction site inspections, stormwater system mapping, and water quality sampling
- Contribute to the development of stormwater programs for state and local clients to support stormwater regulatory compliance.
- Create data management tools such as spatial databases, maps, and apps in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
- Develop methodologies, analytical approaches, and quality standards for recurring work.
- Prepare and review technical reports, memos, and supporting documentation that synthesize findings clearly for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Provide day‑to‑day technical guidance, mentoring, and feedback to junior staff.
- Review and edit work products from early‑career team members, ensuring quality and providing constructive feedback.
- Supervise early‑career team member(s).
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

- Familiarity with environmental regulations, including the Clean Water Act, Massachusetts MS4 Permit, and Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act
- Experience with field water quality sampling protocols, specifically for illicit discharge detection
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and spatial database development a plus
- Experience with coding languages such as Python and ArcGIS Arcade a plus
- Data visualization and graphic design skills
- Understanding of hydrologic processes, water quality treatment mechanisms, and drainage system design concepts
- Ability to travel, if required
- BS in civil/environmental engineering, environmental science or related discipline – masters degree may be substituted for 2 years of relevant experience.
- 5-8 years of stormwater, water quality, and/or regulatory experience.
- Licensure preferred, as applicable.
- Project management experience a plus
- Experience supervising or mentoring a plus
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Boston/Watertown, MA is $95,000-$125,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
