Job Description
This role coordinates, supervises, and directs correctional security operations in a state adult correctional facility.
Typical Functions- Coordinates and supervises or directs correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; may serve as a shift supervisor responsible for all assigned units and functions in a large facility or as the chief of security in a smaller facility.
- May serve as commander of a correctional emergency response team; schedules training exercises and coordinates activities.
- Conducts special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts.
- Coordinates and supervises security, riot and escape procedures, including procedures for inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband.
- Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel; maintains appropriate employee and resident records.
- Conducts inspections of assigned staff at the beginning of shifts to ensure proper attire and fitness for duty; performs periodic post inspections and prepares administrative reports concerning shift operations.
- Acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances.
- Serves as a member of the administrative institutional staff; participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations.
At this level, employees serve as a correctional security lieutenant with primary responsibilities for the security operations on an assigned shift or unit within a minimum security facility or hospital security unit. Responsibilities include supervising first‑level supervisors, coordinating shift functions, and managing special units in medium or maximum security environments or overseeing the Correctional Emergency Response Team.
Education and Experience- Three years of experience in correctional or security work for a government or private corrections agency.
- Minimum age of twenty (20) years, with no maximum age specified by the Director.
- Either thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma or GED with completion of an approved training course within the first six (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques, staffing patterns, scheduling, inmate discipline, inmate psychology, firearms use and care, restraint methods, English usage, basic math, and report writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, follow oral and written instructions, gather and organize facts, prepare clear reports, evaluate situations quickly, act decisively in emergencies, communicate security techniques, maintain firearms proficiency, and manage conflict resolution with inmates.
- Good moral character.
- Completion of a proper training program for correctional officers and guards prior to duty.
- Annual physical fitness test in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Valid driver’s license at time of appointment.
- Subject to drug testing.
- Willingness to work any assigned shift or day of the week.
- Peace officer designation eligibility and compliance with required training and screening if applicable.
