The Respiratory Therapist provides specialized respiratory care and treatment to residents with acute or chronic cardiopulmonary conditions in a nursing home or long‑term care setting. This role involves evaluating residents' respiratory needs, administering therapy, monitoring progress, and collaborating with physicians and nursing staff to ensure optimal respiratory health and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities- Assess residents' respiratory conditions and recommend appropriate therapy.
- Administer respiratory treatments (e.g., nebulizers, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, suctioning).
- Set up and monitor mechanical ventilation or CPAP/BiPAP equipment when needed.
- Educate residents, families, and staff on respiratory conditions and proper equipment usage.
- Maintain accurate records of treatments, assessments, and resident progress.
- Monitor vital signs and oxygen saturation levels; respond to respiratory distress or emergencies.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation staff.
- Ensure equipment is clean, maintained, and used in accordance with safety standards.
- Assist with weaning residents off ventilators or other support, when applicable.
- Follow infection control protocols and all regulatory compliance standards.
- Education:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program. - Licensure/Certification:
Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LRT) in the state of [State]. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential preferred. BLS/CPR certification required. - Experience:
Previous experience in long‑term care, geriatrics, or a clinical respiratory setting preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Compassionate, patient‑centered care approach.
- Effective communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Knowledge of respiratory therapy equipment and procedures.
- Work is performed in a long‑term care or skilled nursing facility.
- May require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.
- May involve exposure to infectious diseases and the use of PPE.
