Position: Assistant Professor of Biology - Immunology (tenure-track)

Overview

The Department of Biology at Colby College is seeking an immunologist to fill an open, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2026. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences with emphasis in molecular, cellular or developmental biology, genetics or biochemistry. We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated expertise in immunology, with a research program that addresses questions of fundamental immunology or biomedical applications.

Responsibilities
  • Teach 4.5 courses per year, with laboratories and discussion-based seminar classes constituting a portion of that load.
  • Teach BI225 Immunology (with lab), BI325 Advanced Immunology (no lab), an additional course in the candidate’s area of expertise, and rotation in the introductory course BI163 The Cellular Basis of Life.
  • Contribute to undergraduate education through teaching, research mentorship, and service; collaboration with the department’s strengths, including complementing an existing eco-immunologist faculty member.
  • Develop a research program that may intersect with physiology, cell biology, molecular or structural biology, neurobiology, endocrinology, or reproductive biology, and engage topics of interest to students pursuing pre-health professional pathways.
  • Establish an active research program that includes supervision and mentoring of undergraduates.
  • Collaborate with facilities supporting invertebrate and fish models and cell culture; note that mammals are not supported in our facilities.
  • Explore collaborative research opportunities through active affiliations with the Jackson Laboratory, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.
  • Consider eligibility for a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professorship, including dedicated annual research funds and salaries for undergraduate research assistants.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in the biological sciences with emphasis in molecular, cellular or developmental biology, genetics, or biochemistry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in immunology and a research program addressing fundamental immunology or biomedical applications.
  • A commitment to undergraduate education; teaching experience is desirable.
  • Interest in contributing to the access, opportunity, and excellence of the campus community through teaching, research, and mentorship.
