The University of New England ( UNE ) is seeking an Athletic Trainer to join our Athletics department to support the welfare and athletic experience of our varsity student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing direct care, developing and implementing injury prevention strategies, coordinating with medical professionals, and handling key administrative duties to ensure the health and safety. This role is essential in fostering a safe, supportive, and high-performance environment, enhancing the student-athlete experience.

This is a 10-month, salaried exempt position with year-round benefits. The typical contract period runs from August through May, with two months off-contract during the summer (June–July), subject to variation based on sport coverage needs.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in the planning and coordinating of the Athletic Training Services, functions, and programs.
  • Provide athletic training services to student-athletes:
  • Conducting comprehensive injury management, from prevention and recognition to evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation, as well as administering emergency first aid in the event of injury
  • Manage injuries and rehabilitation under physician’s direction as appropriate
  • Counsel athletes
  • Prepare athletes for practices and contests by providing preventative taping, protection of previous injuries and giving special instructions for safety etc.
  • Establishing a system that guarantees athletes receive independent medical care while ensuring that team doctors and athletic trainers have the ultimate authority on decisions about an athlete’s health and when they are cleared to return to play
  • Stay current with new developments in athletic training methods and technology
  • Travel with athletic teams as deemed appropriate by the Head Athletic Trainer
  • Complete essential administrative tasks including timely completion of documentation, reviewing and approving student-athlete medical records (including but not limited to physical exams, health history questionnaires etc)
  • Maintain and operate athletic training room facilities and equipment
  • Supervise student workers as necessary
  • Serve as a preceptor for athletic training students by providing training, supervision, and evaluation, if applicable
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelors and/or Masters degree in Athletic Training required.
  • Current certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association required
  • Current Maine State ATC licensing required (or ability to get to licensed)
  • Current CPR / AED certification (or ability to get certified)
