Job Summary
Reporting to the supervisor of mechanical and electrical services, the plumbing and heating mechanic will be responsible for maintenance and repair of all plumbing and heating systems at the College. The mechanic must work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community. The position requires prior experience with installing and maintaining institutional/commercial plumbing and heating systems.

Responsibilities- Install and maintain institutional/commercial plumbing and heating systems, including medium and low-pressure steam distribution systems, heat exchangers, humidifiers, gas piping, air handlers, and large hydronic systems
- Inspect and repair all bathroom fixtures, kitchen sinks, grease traps, and other water and waste systems
- Respond to emergency calls as necessary and serve in a rotating on-call pool; able to independently assess situations and form a plan for remedy; able to respond within a 45-minute window
- Follow all safety rules and procedures
- Demonstrate communication and leadership skills
- Maintain all preventative maintenance (PM) records and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) records/updates
- Read blueprints and estimate materials
- Make recommendations to supervisor regarding improvements and problems
- Maintain the tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a clean, neat, and orderly condition
- Independently respond to work orders and requests
- Ability to operate power tools and equipment necessary to perform job duties
- Develop schedules and plans
- Perform work in a prompt, neat, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning, and thoughtfulness
- Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
- High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
- Maine State Journeyman Plumbing License or equivalent experience with the ability to earn licensure within one year from the date of employment
- Prior experience with installing and maintaining institutional/commercial plumbing and heating systems is necessary
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
- Attention to detail and accuracy are critical
- Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
- Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
- Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Applicable licensure such as Journeyman Oil Burner, Certified Welder, High Pressure Boiler Operator
Typical duties include lifting up to 10 pounds regularly, occasional lifting up to 35–50 pounds, extended use of a computer, and regular movement throughout campus. Safety and environmental conditions are moderate, requiring modest hearing and vision capability.
