Full-time Contractor Position.

Reports to:

Aztecas Program Supervisor.

Compensation: $35/hour.

Position Summary

The Aztecas program is a mentorship program that reclaims the lives of youth who struggle with gangs, violence, poverty, and drugs in Santa Cruz County. The program is rooted in soccer and community to support youth and provide opportunities for success. Aztecas coordinates youth activities and provides academic support and tutoring assistance. The Aztecas program is utilized as a prevention, intervention and/or diversion program and has served the Juvenile Courts, Juvenile Probation, Santa Cruz County Office of Education and Pajaro Valley Unified School District.

Oversight of the program is run by the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Probation Department.

The Academic Coordinator is responsible for supporting the academic success, personal development, and community engagement of program participants. This role provides direct academic instruction, coordinates enrichment and service activities, collaborates with families, schools, probation officers, and community partners to ensure a strength-based youth centered approach to academic case management. The position also provides oversight of program activities and coordination of shared Clubhouse space and scheduling.

Key Responsibilities
  • Academic Support & Instruction:
    • Lead one-on-one and small group academic lessons tailored to the individual needs, goals, and learning styles of each student.
    • Review classroom materials, curricula topics, and assignments to support student educational achievement and progress.
    • Contribute to student learning, growth, and academic advancement through consistent monitoring and engagement.
    • Utilize critical thinking and analytical skills to facilitate problem-solving related to academic case management for identified students.
    • Maintain a growth mindset and strengths-based approach to student learning and instructional practices.
    • Serve as a positive role model by adhering to the Youth Agreement signed by program participants.
  • Family & School

    Collaboration:

    • Collaborate effectively with parents/guardians and Aztecas staff to improve student performance and engagement.
    • Communicate regularly with parents and provide education on effective student engagement strategies, including navigating Santa Cruz County Office of Education (COE) and Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) online portals if applicable.
    • In collaboration with Probation Officers, provide parent and youth engagement to follow up on IEP (Individualized Education Plans) and 504 Plan (Behavioral Support Plans) meetings; include school staff as part of a team, based approach when needed to address academic concerns.
    • Assist youth in identifying natural supports within schools and the community, ensuring students have a trusted “go-to” adult when additional support is needed.
  • Program Coordination & Youth Engagement:
    • Coordinate and supervise field trips, family engagement activities, and other program-related activities as needed.
    • Coordinate and supervise community service projects and accurately track youth community service hours.
    • Facilitate a minimum of monthly meetings with youth, families, staff, or partners as required to maintain relationships and connections.
    • Assist in organizing the Youth Summer Soccer Camp (2 weeks), including applications, attendance tracking, equipment, and coordination and co-supervision of coaches and volunteers.
  • Mentorship, Interns & Community Partnerships:
    • Seek out, recruit, and support mentors for program participants, including providing guidance and training.
    • Collaborate with local universities and junior colleges to identify, recruit, and onboard student interns or volunteers to tutor high school youth involved with Aztecas Soccer Academy.
  • Communication & Reporting:
    • Communicate regularly with assigned Probation Officer(s) regarding youth progress and relevant contacts.
    • Prepare up to one monthly press release or social media post highlighting Aztecas Soccer Academy community events and submit content to the Probation Social Media Committee and Assistant Division Director, Juvenile Probation for review.
Requirements of Position
  • 40 hours a week - Flexible work schedule with varying hours per program needs.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).
  • Currently CA DL.
  • Licensed and Insured motor vehicle.
  • Ability to supervise youth and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work on feet for long periods of time and to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Must pass First-Aid and CPR training within the first 90 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of principals of diversity and inclusion.
Contractor Position Benefits
  • Up to 2 weeks of PTO (combined sick/vacation) - after 6 months.
  • Four paid holidays (New Year’s, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, & Christmas Day).
