Shift: Hours Vary; typical hours Monday‑Friday 8am‑4pm; weekend day shifts required.

Position Description

Under the supervision of the Van Driver Trainer, the Van Driver (Non‑Commercial License) provides door‑to‑door service for elderly and/or physically challenged passengers, keeps simple records, maintains the van in a clean, safe, and orderly condition and performs other related work as required while adhering to agency, union, and state safety regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Drive a specially‑equipped van to pick up and drop off elderly and/or physically or mentally‑limited or ill persons to medical destinations; ensure lifts and tie‑down equipment are operational and that passengers are transported safely and in a timely manner.
  • Drive a van to pick up and drop off seniors to and from congregate meal sites and other central locations; provide van service for other senior passenger activities as time permits; may drive for outside contracts.
  • Provide out‑of‑county transportation services to qualified clients.
  • Plan, establish, and adjust schedules to meet unanticipated changes; determine safest and most efficient pick‑up and drop‑off routes.
  • Assist ambulatory and non‑ambulatory passengers on and off the van in a safe and courteous manner, providing door‑to‑door service.
  • Collect donations from clients and return them to the administrative offices of Lift Line in a timely manner.
  • Handle sensitive medical, equipment, and potential emergencies, including the secure handling of portable oxygen tanks.
  • Note visible changes in passengers’ physical or mental health; communicate this information to appropriate personnel for follow‑up; may carry and deliver prescription drugs and medical documents not entrusted to passengers; report any client issues immediately to the Driver Supervisor or scheduler.
  • Perform pre‑trip procedures, including inspecting the van and maintaining it in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; report maintenance needs.
  • Operate the van safely and courteously, following California driving laws, seat‑belt, and cell‑phone regulations.
  • Maintain standard records such as logs of passengers driven, miles driven, and gasoline purchased; submit all paperwork daily as required.
  • Describe services offered to persons who may qualify and benefit from such services.
  • Operate a two‑way radio according to FCC regulations.
  • Assist with transportation office activities, such as scheduling rides, dispatching, answering the telephone, filing, report preparation, or other tasks as assigned.
  • Follow the Lift Line Driver Handbook; attend all staff meetings; participate in training programs, Accident, Health and Safety, and Training Committee meetings.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other agency staff and others in regular contact with the program.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with people from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and lifestyle backgrounds; demonstrate knowledge of and sensitivity to their needs.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of California driving laws and regulations.
  • Ability to safely and courteously transport elderly, physically, and/or mentally limited and ill passengers.
  • Ability to identify significant changes in passengers’ physical and mental conditions and report them to the appropriate persons.
  • Proficient in driving a large passenger van.
  • Ability to determine safe and efficient routes.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to read street maps.
  • Able to perform work independently and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
  • Keep standard records of work performed.
  • Collect, record, and deposit donations.
  • Maintain the van in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Communicate effectively and be sensitive to the needs of the passenger population served.
  • Work cooperatively with co‑workers and others contacted in the course of the work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Experience with wheelchair lifts, tie‑downs, ramps, rails, and two‑way radio.
