Special education teachers work with students who have mental, emotional, physical, or learning disabilities. Teachers are responsible for leading learning for their students and developing curriculum and lesson plans, presenting lessons to students individually or in groups, tracking progress, creating reports for parents, and maintaining a safe classroom environment to optimize student capabilities.
Education and Experience- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Teaching credential/certificate/license for corresponding age/grade level issued by the BOEE
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to build relationships effectively and professionally with families and students.
- Experience developing and implementing curriculum.
- Physical ability to handle frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and moving throughout the room.
- Proven ability to maintain a safe and studious classroom environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum.
- Ability to collaborate within the school and instructional setting.
- Demonstrated desire to be a life‑long learner.
- Assess students' skills and determine their educational needs.
- Adapt general lessons to meet students' needs.
- Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student with the IEP Team.
- Plan activities that are specific to each student's abilities.
- Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one‑on‑one.
- Implement IEPs, assess students' performance, and track their progress.
- Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students' progress and goals.
- Work collaboratively in with general education teachers in support of student IEP needs.
- When appropriate co‑teach in the general education classroom.
- Discuss students' progress with parents, other teachers, counselors, and administrators.
- Supervise and mentor teacher assistants who work with students with disabilities.
