Waukegan Public School District 60 serves approximately 17,000 students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district is located on Lake Michigan just south of the Wisconsin border, offering a diverse community setting for educators and staff. District 60 is composed of about two dozen schools, including 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, and a high school program across three buildings. The district is committed to providing quality education, supporting student growth, and fostering collaborative school environments where staff can make a meaningful impact.

Role Description

The Elementary Assistant Principal is a full-time, on-site role based in Waukegan, IL. This position supports the Principal in leading the school's academic and operational activities, including overseeing daily school routines, student supervision, and building safety. The role involves collaborating with teachers to implement curriculum, monitor student progress, and support instructional practices that improve learning outcomes. The Assistant Principal helps manage student behavior, supports positive school climate initiatives, and engages with families and community partners to strengthen school-home communication.

Additional responsibilities include participating in staff evaluations, assisting with professional development, and ensuring compliance with district policies and state regulations.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated instructional leadership skills, including the ability to support curriculum implementation, data-informed decision-making, and effective teaching practices.
  • Strong skills in student support and behavior management, with the ability to foster a safe, inclusive, and positive school climate.
  • Proficiency in communication and collaboration, including working effectively with teachers, staff, families, and community partners.
  • Organizational and administrative skills to manage multiple priorities, support school operations, and ensure adherence to district and state guidelines.
  • Ability to use educational technology and student information systems to support instruction, communication, and reporting.
  • Master's degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field; appropriate Illinois administrative certification (or eligibility) preferred.
  • Experience in K-5 or elementary school settings, with a commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and the academic and social-emotional development of all students.
  • Capacity to model professionalism, ethical conduct, and continuous improvement in line with district values and goals.
