On‑Site Project / Process Engineer – Position and Responsibilities

As an on‑site Project / Process Engineer with Middough, you will be responsible for the development, execution, and management of client projects, including project profitability, safety, and client satisfaction. You are required to work on‑site (3‑5 days per week) at the client facility in Waukegan, IL. In this role you will control available resources, perform field engineering tasks, and manage project scope, schedule, budget, and contractual requirements while providing leadership and organization to projects under the client’s purview.

You will also instill confidence in the client regarding the capabilities of the Middough team (including remote engineering and architecture teams), serving as the primary point of contact for the project client and other external stakeholders collaborating on the project.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate completion of defined work scope for onsite projects between various client departments (engineering, operations, maintenance, safety, procurement) and Middough departments involved in the project.
  • Develop, review, and approve all project management documents including scope development, project costs and schedules, and internal/external communications.
  • Assist in preparation of project execution strategy and review progress of drawings and specifications prior to permit issuance and construction.
  • Support site engineering team with preliminary engineering field studies, calculations, process design and capital submission paperwork.
  • Supervise the preparation of project proposal, specification, scope, and negotiate final contract.
  • Monitor changes in scope and schedule to secure change authorizations as needed.
  • Prepare bid packages (as required), facilitate bidder communications, coordinate bid evaluations and prepare award recommendations to the client.
  • Monitor project costs and quality to ensure the profitability and technical performance of the project and develop innovative actions to correct variances to scope, budget and/or schedule.
  • Manage day‑to‑day activities and recommend actions related to scope, cost, schedule, risk and quality.
  • Anticipate, recognize, and identify key project challenges and problems to establish and direct problem‑solving objectives and priorities for resolution.
  • Support project, business, and relationship development activities of the Senior Project Manager.
  • Manage and support projects from detailed engineering through procurement support, construction/execution, commissioning and the closeout over the 6‑month engagement.
  • Interact with operations, maintenance, EHS, Quality, Procurement and Finance departments daily.
Qualifications
  • Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 5–15 years of project management or project engineer experience in the chemical industry (preferred).
  • Broad knowledge and experience with basic engineering and construction models including A/E, AEPCM, or Design Build.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with and general knowledge of safety and contract/liability issues.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and attention to detail abilities.
  • Ability to multitask and organize for project efficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently walk, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop or kneel, bend or twist, use repeating motions that may include the wrists/hands/fingers and talk and hear.
  • Frequently use up‑close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Should not expect adverse environmental conditions within company offices.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as climbing ladders and/or stairs, extreme heat and/or cold, and/or poor air quality) if or when on‑site at a client facility. Noise levels may be moderate to high at various client sites; hearing protection may be required and/or provided. Safety protections provided by the client and/or company are required to be used and followed.
