HVAC Technician

Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,500 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9th – 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

The Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 has set an ambitious agenda for change, guided by the belief that all children, regardless of circumstances, can achieve at high levels and academic gaps can and will be eliminated with the support of teachers who deliver engaging, relevant, and academically rigorous instruction that excites students and instills a love of learning in them.

The HVAC Technician will be directly responsible to the Director of Operations and/or his designee. Responsibilities include operating, maintaining and repairing all types of environmental systems installed in the Waukegan School system buildings; installing, troubleshooting and repairing all fixed and portable electrical equipment including but not limited to motors, wiring, conduit, electrical and HVAC devices; performing required preventative maintenance procedures on all environmental equipment and system;

performing tasks such as snow plowing, delivery work, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations or his designee; and directing unskilled help assigned to assist with installation, repair or preventive maintenance procedures.

Specific duties include driving a truck, loader/backhoe, delivery vehicles, snow plowing equipment and similar equipment and performing other related activities; making all installations and repairs in a neat and professional manner in accordance with all applicable codes including the National Electrical Code, Life Safety Code and the Building Codes of the City of Waukegan; maintaining hand and electrical tools; using safety procedures when using tools and equipment on jobs;

troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining boilers, pumps, converters, heat exchangers, compressors and all associated heating and cooling equipment; troubleshooting and repairing refrigerators and freezer equipment; operating and maintaining low pressure boilers and associated equipment; repairing and maintaining environmental control systems, both pneumatic and electronic; maintaining accurate legible records of fuel consumption, pressures and temperatures and chemical test data on boilers and heating systems;

installing and maintaining heating systems and related equipment; properly using test equipment for electrical and HVAC equipment troubleshooting; working with single phase and multi-phase electrical equipment; performing maintenance tasks of a general nature such as plumbing, electrical, sheet metal, air conditioning and carpentry as needed; responding to heating and control systems problems during the season; performing preventative maintenance tasks as assigned;

keeping accurate records of materials and supply requisitions; maintaining and recording accurate records pertaining to supplies and time spent using the district work order system; and performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations and/or his designee.

Qualifications include having and maintaining a positive attitude; representing the Waukegan School District and the department of Operations in the best possible light; being in good health and able to perform all jobs assigned; being able to climb ladders and adjust to heights; being able to plan and lay out jobs as assigned and for their timely completion; being refrigerant certified or willing to obtain certificates within six months of employment;

having 5 years of recent practical experience, and/or training in HVAC refrigeration service or a related maintenance field; having a good working knowledge of test equipment including but not limited to ohmmeters, volt meters, meggers phase meters, air velocity meters and refrigeration leak detection equipment; having a working knowledge of motors, windings, armatures, brushes and bearings, controllers, switch gear, transformers and circuit breakers;

being able to use effectively all tools associated with electrical work including conduit benders, pliers, screwdrivers, wire cutters and strippers; having a working knowledge of psychometrics; being able to read blueprints and schematics; being able to accurately read wiring diagrams, control system diagrams and system diagrams; having knowledge of gas burners, control valves, and safety devices; having knowledge of pumps, impellers, and bearing assemblies;

having willingness to continue education and training in selected trades such as obtaining and maintaining asbestos license; having a high school diploma or equivalent; having a valid driver's license; having own hand tools; being able to understand written and oral…
