Primary duty is to instruct undergraduate students in MUS
172:
Private Clarinet Lessons with support toward course credit fulfillment, juries, and recitals. Variable 3-10 student lessons/semester based on registration and Music Program needs; max of 200 annual hours. Responsibilities:
Instruction of student(s) in MUS
172: a private clarinet lesson environment. Students taking 1 credit will receive one 50-minute lesson per week. There will be 12 weeks of lessons per semester, plus a jury (on Reading Day) or a 13th lesson. Development of written syllabi and required course materials with an evaluation of subject matter taught, maintenance of student records, and grading of student progress. Available to advise and assist students on their progress of the below Applied Lessons Learning Outcomes (and communicate with full-time faculty regarding any issues or deficiencies:) *
  • Demonstrate improvement in technical ability on the instrument studied.
    * Be able to describe the application of various techniques to the performance of repertoire.
    * Explore a wide selection of musical literature, with an emphasis on the principal eras, genres, and cultural sources.
    * Develop, express, and defend musical judgments.
    * Express artistic and musical messages through performance.
    * Enhance basic musicianship skills, including sight-reading and basic harmonic understanding. Year 1 Progression:
    Complete required etudes, scales, repertoire and technical accomplishments and demonstrate progression from Fall to Spring as assessed through Applied Faculty reports
    * and jury results. Year 2 Progression:
    Demonstrate progression from Year I as assessed through Applied Faculty reports
    * and jury results. Year 3 Progression:
    Demonstrate progression from Year 2 as assessed through Applied Faculty reports
    * and jury results. Year 4 Progression:
    Demonstrate progression from Year 3 as assessed through Applied Faculty reports
    * and jury results.
    * If an applied lessons instructor determines that a student is not meeting learning outcome expectations by the midterm point in any semester (7th week of classes), a mock jury sheet should be completed by the instructor, discussed with the student, and sent that same week via email to either the Director of Instrumental Music. Participation in the student assessment process for juries and recitals.

    If and instructor has students registered for MUS
    470 or MUS
    471 (Junior or Senior Recital), attendance is required at the pre-recital jury, recital dress rehearsal, and recital. Work collaboratively with the accompanists, department faculty, and chair of the department. Be present for the following occasions: *
    • Department Juries
      * Department Recitals
      * Performance Lab when needed
      * Music Scholarship auditions
      * Other University events or departmental events where the instructor is requested Provide sample lessons to prospective students when available. Establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with faculty, staff and students. Perform other duties as requested, delegated, or assigned. Education and/or Experience Master's degree in Music or qualified experience in content area. Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience with advanced students and/or possess teaching experience at the college level.

      Technology Skills Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. PC Proficient. Human Relations Skills Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to adjust to changing work environment and to respond to changing institutional needs. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the University.
