Mechanical Engineering Intern
The Mechanical Engineering Intern supports the mechanical design and development of embedded controls and load interconnection products within Generac's home energy portfolio. Working under the guidance of experienced mechanical engineers, the intern gains hands-on experience contributing to real product development projects, including CAD modeling, prototyping, testing, and analysis. This paid internship, based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, is designed to give a current engineering student practical exposure to product development in a collaborative team environment.
Major Responsibilities
- Support mechanical engineers with the design of product components and assemblies using 3D CAD tools.
- Create and update CAD models, drawings, and documentation under the guidance of the engineering team.
- Build, assemble, and help test prototypes in the lab.
- Assist with mechanical testing, data collection, and documentation of results.
- Support basic mechanical analysis, such as tolerance stack-ups and simple simulations.
- Participate in design reviews and team meetings.
- Help research components, materials, and suppliers.
- Assist with organizing and maintaining engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with engineers across firmware, electrical, and product teams as needed.
- Other project work and duties as assigned.
Education
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering degree.
- Completed coursework in mechanical design, statics, or materials preferred.
- In good academic standing, consistent with Generac internship guidelines.
Work Experience
- No professional experience required.
- Prior internship, co-op, or hands-on project experience (such as student design teams, FSAE, or robotics) is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Familiarity with 3D CAD software (such as Creo, Solid Works, or NX) through coursework or projects.
- Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles and common manufacturing processes.
- Eagerness to learn and willingness to take direction and feedback.
- Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
Office Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion, the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
