Position Summary
The Test Technician is responsible for performing electrical, functional, and performance testing of large industrial electrical equipment and related systems to verify compliance with engineering specifications, customer requirements, and applicable industry standards. This role supports final acceptance testing, product validation, troubleshooting, and quality assurance activities throughout the manufacturing process.
Working in a high-voltage test environment, the Test Technician operates specialized electrical test equipment, interprets engineering documentation, analyzes test results, and collaborates with engineering and manufacturing teams to identify and resolve technical issues. The position requires a strong commitment to safety, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform electrical, mechanical, and functional testing in accordance with engineering specifications, customer requirements, and established test procedures.
- Conduct pre-test inspections and verify wiring, instrumentation, and control systems using electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Configure, program, and troubleshoot electronic instrumentation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and automated test equipment.
- Perform low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical testing using specialized diagnostic equipment.
- Execute dielectric, insulation resistance, ratio, capacitance, resistance, frequency response, and other electrical acceptance tests.
- Perform high-voltage performance testing to verify product performance, insulation integrity, dielectric strength, thermal characteristics, and overall system functionality.
- Set up, connect, calibrate, and remove test equipment before and after testing activities.
- Troubleshoot test failures and collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Document test results, nonconformances, and inspection findings using electronic quality and manufacturing systems.
- Identify, investigate, document, and properly segregate nonconforming materials or products in accordance with quality procedures.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and calibration verification on assigned test equipment.
- Maintain clean, organized work areas in accordance with workplace organization (5S) standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, quality, testing efficiency, and process reliability.
- Assist with customer witness testing and technical demonstrations as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support manufacturing and testing operations.
- Strong understanding of electrical theory, power systems, and industrial electrical safety practices.
- Knowledge of high-voltage testing methods and safe work practices, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc flash protection, and fall protection requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Experience using electrical test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, insulation resistance testers, power analyzers, and related diagnostic instruments.
- Strong mathematical aptitude, including algebra, scientific notation, formulas, and engineering unit conversions.
- Ability to analyze test data, troubleshoot equipment issues, and resolve technical problems using established procedures.
- Strong documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office and Windows-based software applications for data entry, reporting, and analysis.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers, engineers, and production personnel.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Experience interpreting electrical control schematics and troubleshooting industrial control systems.
- Experience performing electrical testing on large industrial equipment, power distribution systems, switch gear, rotating equipment, or similar products.
