Project Accountant - Suburban Drywall Company Overview

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Project Accountant to join our finance team. This role is responsible for overseeing project-based accounting functions, including review of project benchmarks and assumptions, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, inventory management, and job cost reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of project accounting principles (specifically POC accounting), and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.

This role will help facilitate and track real-time job level performance by owning and monitoring the monthly WIP schedule. The position will play a critical role in ensuring accurate financial management at the project level. This role is deeply integrated with project delivery teams, working closely with Project Managers to ensure margin estimates are updated regularly, and costs are properly recorded, allocated, and reported.

This role will report to the Director of Finance and collaborate with the Wall Works Holding CFO and Corporate Controller.

Key Responsibilities Project Financial Management
  • Manage and oversee percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting standards, through a detailed job schedule
  • Detailed review of the WIP schedule to ensure all underlying assumptions are an accurate representation of current project status, including all approved change orders and margin assumption changes.
  • Prepare and analyze job cost reports, ensuring accurate allocation of labor, materials, overhead, and subcontractor expenses.
  • Monthly review of inventory movement (purchases, project consumption, inventory balances, etc.) to ensure accuracy and consistency with job cost reports
  • Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and explanations related to project accounting.
  • Identify process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency in project accounting and reporting.
  • Own the financial oversight of projects from initiation through closeout.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to oversee, track, and manage all financial aspects of projects, including revenue recognition, billing, invoicing, budgeting, forecasting, change order recognition, and financial performance.
  • Support project setup and ensure accuracy of all project-related data, including allocation of project costs.
Analysis & Reporting
  • Assist with financial period close processes.
  • Review and validate project budgets, cost estimates, and change orders.
  • Monitor project margins, cost-to-complete estimates, and forecasted profitability.
  • Provide timely reports on project financials, including budget tracking and expense reporting.
  • Analyze variances between actual and budgeted costs and provide recommendations to management.
  • Perform financial analysis to support Estimators in bid pricing and other decision-making.
  • Monitor job cost for corrective action.
  • Deliver clear, actionable insights to Project Managers and finance leadership.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in project-based construction or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition methodologies.
