Work Assignment Details
Position works 40 work hours weekly from April through December. National Land Management Technician is expected to work some evenings and weekends, other weekday hours are flexible. County Vehicle is provided for use during work hours. Preferred starting date is April 6th, 2026, but we will consider individuals who cannot begin until May due to school commitments.
Classification Specification- Work with Natural Resource Program Coordinator and Natural Land Management Park Maintenance Worker to conduct ecological restoration and natural resource inventories (flora/fauna) of Park System natural areas including, but not limited to, invasive species control, prescribed burning, tree planting, and native seeding.
- Assist with GIS mapping using ESRI applications of invasive species, rare native plants, and wildlife within park system natural areas.
- Work with Natural Land Management Park Maintenance Worker, Volunteer & Community Development Coordinator, Park Foremen and Natural Resource Program Coordinator to develop natural land management work projects for volunteer groups. The candidate will help execute these projects in the field either alone or in a group.
- Serve as a Crew Leader for volunteer projects, having a cheery welcoming disposition while greeting groups on site, giving instructions on project details, monitoring work from start to finish, cleaning up afterwards and providing summary of work accomplished to Park staff.
- Conduct regular equipment maintenance including, but not limited to, tool sharpening, cleaning, and basic small engine maintenance.
- Maintain records of natural land management project accomplishments, equipment inventory, volunteer records, herbicide usage, Waukesha County forms, timesheets, regular email correspondence, project lists, etc.
- Current student or recent graduate in Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Conservation or related field.
- Effectively work on a team or independently on projects Engage and oversee individual volunteers and/or groups to complete projects
- Be able to read and understand the Natural Land Management Plans for Waukesha County Park System natural areas.
- Plant identification skills are desired.
- Pesticide applicators license (Right-of-ways & Natural Areas 6.0) is desired. Required to obtain within one month of hiring date.
- Experience in the operation of power tools / equipment is desired.
- Reliable transportation to and from work.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to a schedule that may change weekly, and a willingness to be helpful in various areas of the parks.
