- Perform precise metallographic preparation, including cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching of alloy test specimens.
- Conduct microhardness and macro hardness testing using Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers equipment to verify material specifications.
- Evaluate microstructure anomalies, case depth, grain size, and intergranular oxidation using optical microscopy.
- Audit and interpret furnace thermal charts and pyrometry data against customer recipe requirements and aerospace standards.
- Complete detailed laboratory test reports, non-conformance records (NCRs), and quality documentation in the company's tracking system.
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory testing equipment, instrumentation, and chemical etching stations safely.
- Assist the Plant Quality Control Manager during internal, customer, and third-party regulatory audits.
- Education:
Associate Degree (2-year degree) in Mechatronics, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Quality Engineering, or a related technical discipline. - Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a metallurgical laboratory or quality control role, ideally within a heat-treating or metal manufacturing environment. - Technical
Skills:
Proven proficiency with hardness testing machinery, specimen preparation tools, and digital optical microscopes. - Industry Knowledge:
Strong familiarity with aerospace and defense quality standards (e.g., Nadcap, AS9100, AMS specifications) or heavy industrial metal standards. - Physical Demands:
Ability to lift up to 35 lbs, stand for extended periods in a laboratory/plant environment, and handle laboratory chemicals safely with proper PPE. - Core Competencies:
High attention to detail, strong mathematical and analytical skills, and the ability to read technical blueprints or engineering schemas.
The Heat Treat Metallurgical Lab Technician (Level
2) performs critical metallurgical testing, inspection, and analysis on heat-treated alloy components. Operating within the Quality Assurance Department, this role ensures all thermal processing meets rigorous aerospace, defense, and heavy industrial specifications (such as Nadcap and AS9100). The Technician evaluates material properties, interprets furnace charts, and collaborates directly with production teams to maintain strict corporate and regulatory quality standards.
