Job Overview

Waupun Memorial Hospital's Medical Surgical Department (Med Surg) is a 14‑bed unit connected to a 3‑bed ICU. The unit maintains a 4:1 patient‑to‑nurse ratio on days and a 5:1 ratio on nights. All shifts include a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and 24/7 security to support patient and staff safety. Nurses work 12‑hour shifts and every third weekend. The small facility enables close relationships with patients and a supportive team often described as a second family.

• 6‑week rotating schedule mixing days and evenings:
• Week 1,3,5:
  Thursday 7am‑3:30pm;
  Saturday 3pm‑11:30pm
• Week 2,4,6:
  Sunday 3pm‑11:30pm;
  Thursday 7am‑3:30pm;
  Friday 3pm‑11:30pm

Provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the organization.

• Use standards of medical‑surgical nursing practice to enhance quality of care and patient quality of life.
• Establish effective relationships and advocate for patients, families, and significant others to develop individualized care plans.
• Apply the nursing process: assess patients, develop diagnoses, identify expected outcomes, implement interventions, and evaluate results.
• Develop assessment and management strategies considering physical, functional, cultural, social, economic, developmental, spiritual, vocational, and leisure dimensions.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of illness and patient status across dimensions.
• Lead and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess needs, set goals, plan interventions, provide care, and evaluate outcomes.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, significant others, and health‑care providers, ensuring culturally sensitive, ethical, legal, holistic, informed, compassionate, and humane care within economic resource limits.
• Educate patients, families, and significant others about health promotion and comfort measures.
• Mentor and serve as a role model for nursing colleagues, students, and others to foster a healthy work environment.
• Apply evidence‑based practice and scientific knowledge to practice, ensuring age‑specific and clinical needs are met.
• Remain alert and safe at all times; perform point‑of‑care testing per policies and perform other duties as assigned.

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing school or equivalent education for licensing.
Experience: None required.
Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, walking, lifting (0–25lb and occasionally up to 50lb), reaching, sitting, keyboard use; occasional patient lifting and driving; occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive foot/arm movements.
Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of work location, and Basic Life Support Health‑Care Provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association.
States: Illinois, Missouri (Compact or state license), Oklahoma (Compact or board license), Wisconsin (Compact or board license).
