Purpose of the Position
This temporary, seasonal position is designed for college students seeking hands‑on surveying experience in a real‑world, professional setting. Students will work alongside experienced staff to assist with field surveying activities that support the design, layout, and construction of public works projects. This role provides practical experience using surveying equipment and techniques, strengthens skills learned in the classroom, and offers valuable exposure to municipal engineering and public works operations.
Students typically serve as a Survey Crew Member and gain resume‑building experience that supports future careers in surveying, civil engineering, or related fields.
- Serve as a member of a survey crew engaged in: setting sidewalk, building, and lawn grades; design mapping and stake out of project sites for a variety of public works projects; property surveys; establishing right‑of‑way locations; setting of traffic counters and performing other surveys related to traffic studies.
- Operate a variety of survey equipment such as an engineering level, digital level, total station, data collector and Global Positioning System in performing location, topographic and related engineering and surveying work; keep field notes; make computations to calculate lines, grades, and elevations.
- Serve as a Project Representative performing layout and inspection of public works construction projects to insure conformance with project plans and specifications; record notes and observations; record locations for future reference.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have experience, coursework, or other training in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or other closely related field, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. Strong math background and willingness to work outdoors are required for this position. Valid Wisconsin driver's license required. Must be 18 years of age or older.
Experience or training in Trimble Survey Controller field collection software, Trimble RTK GPS equipment, conventional surveying equipment including total stations and automatic and digital levels is desired, but not required.
Physical Requirements and Working ConditionsModerate exposure to environmental conditions that impact physical comfort such as poor ventilation and temperature extremes. May require specialized clothing or use of common personal protective equipment. Damage to clothing possible. Frequent travel around the Wausau area.
Normal mental and visual attention is required. Light physical demands to include bending, twisting, turning, and light lifting. Limited exposure to workplace hazards.
Additional InformationPlease attach a Cover Letter and Resume to your completed application for the hiring manager to review. This is a temporary/seasonal position from approximately May through August, depending on the candidate's availability, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Newly hired candidates who are selected to fill this position will start at the year 1 rate of $18.03 per hour. Returning candidates to the same position will be paid according to the following chart:
- Year 2 = $19.06 per hour
- Year 3 = $20.60 per hour
- Year 4 = $22.15 per hour
Satisfactory results of a background check, pre‑employment physical evaluation, and drug screen are required for hire. Seasonal positions are limited to 1,200 hours of employment during any rolling calendar year and are not eligible for any benefits.
