Location: Town of Wausau

Position Overview

Schedule:

PRN – as needed coverage during clinic hours (Monday through Friday). No set hours or consistent days.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete initial assessments and document required data for admission.
  • Collect, record, and analyze pertinent data within prescribed time frames, including patient strengths & limitations, cultural/spiritual factors, discharge needs, medical status, medication history, and age‑specific needs.
  • Involve and observe patient support systems (family, friends) in assessment and documentation.
  • Advocate for patients, explain rights, obtain necessary consents, and protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assist in patient orientation, provide unit safety information, and conduct respectful gown/contraband searches.
  • Initiate and update treatment plans, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and represent nursing care at staffings.
  • Write clear, concise, attainable treatment goals and review them as they are achieved or modified.
  • Review lab results, evaluate for falls, self‑abuse, suicidality, assaultive behavior and implement appropriate precautions.
  • Identify substance‑withdrawal signs, neuroleptic side‑effects, and cardiac/respiratory emergencies; respond with appropriate interventions.
  • Provide medication administration according to right patient, right drug, right dose, right time, and right route; maintain current knowledge of pharmacology and document all medication interactions.
  • Educate patients and families about medications and health topics before discharge.
  • Organize patient care activities based on priorities, unit standards, hospital policies, and cultural/age‑specific needs.
  • Assist with admissions, transfers, and care activities in accordance with EMTALA and other regulatory requirements.
  • Adhere to safety, infection control, and environmental hazard prevention standards.
  • Participate in continuing education, in‑services, and performance‑improvement programs.
  • Support the development and implementation of unit standards of care, safety levels, and educational equipment needs.
  • Serve on unit‑based committees, lead unit projects, and hold a charge‑nurse role when required.
  • Coordinate unit activities, manage therapeutic milieu, plan patient‑care assignments, and maintain orderly unit operations.
  • Supervise, delegate, and preside over LPN/psychiatric technician tasks, and provide direction for accurate billing data.
  • Maintain a primary caseload and collaborate with the Clinical Services manager on professional growth and improvement goals.
  • Participate in hospital committees, performance‑improvement teams, and patient‑care improvement projects.
  • Demonstrate punctuality, effective communication, organization, professionalism, and positive team leadership.
  • Comply with all Hospital policies, including Human Resources, Infection Control, and Employee Health programs.
  • Support staffing adjustments as needed and provide assistance to peers when required.
  • Project a professional image through appropriate attire and patient‑centered interactions.
Education and Training Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Registered nurse licensed by the State Board of Nursing in the state of employment; license must be in good standing.
  • CPR certification required (or to be completed within 30 days of hire); recertify bi‑annually.
  • Formal training in management of aggressive patients required (or to be completed within 60 days); recertify annually.
  • Previous psychiatric experience with children, adolescents, and adults preferred.
  • Qualified medical professional (QMP) designation may be required; evaluation and renewal at least annually.
  • Experience with children under HFS §40 preferable for Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs.
