Job Requirements

  • Directly supervise and coordinate the daily activities of agricultural workers engaged in planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, processing, and general maintenance of American ginseng crops.
  • Assign tasks and work schedules, and monitor progress while adjusting tasks to meet production deadlines if needed.
  • Train workers in planting, harvesting, weeding, insect identification, pesticide application, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Operate farm equipment and machinery as needed.
  • Inspect crops, equipment, buildings, fences, and supplies to identify maintenance or any repair needs.
  • Maintain accurate records related to production, worker attendance, equipment maintenance, and inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and company policies.
  • Issue warnings or corrective actions when necessary to workers.
  • Communicate work instructions clearly and resolve worker questions, problems, or conflicts.
  • Seasonal Duties:
    Coordinate the dismantling, moving, and setting up of shade structures, tarps, and specialized ginseng growing equipment. Manage seedbed preparation and other tasks specific to ginseng cultivation. Oversee post-harvest procedures.
  • Off-Season Duties:
    Schedule, inspect, and perform/oversee cleaning and repairs on all farm machinery, barns, storage facilities, and processing buildings.
  • Analyze crop plans to determine labor needs for the coming season.
  • Collaborate with human resources on recruitment for seasonal workers and ensuring compliance with all federal and state labor laws.
  • Plan and implement safety training and development programs.
  • Maintain off-season communication with seasonal workers to confirm availability and coordinate other necessary information.
  • Monitor workers to ensure that safety regulations are followed, warning or disciplining those who violate safety regulations.
  • Train workers in spawning, rearing, cultivating, and harvesting methods, and in the use of equipment.
  • Train workers in techniques such as planting, harvesting, weeding, or insect identification and in the use of safety measures.
  • Confer with managers to evaluate weather or soil conditions, to develop plans or procedures, or to discuss issues such as changes in fertilizers, herbicides, or cultivating techniques.
  • Inspect crops, fields, or plant stock to determine conditions and need for cultivating, spraying, weeding, or harvesting.
  • Coordinate dismantling, moving, and setting up equipment at new work sites.
  • Drive or operate farm machinery, such as trucks, tractors, or self-propelled harvesters, to transport workers or supplies or to cultivate or harvest fields.
  • Inspect buildings, fences, fields or ranges, supplies, and equipment to determine work to be performed.
  • Inspect facilities to determine maintenance needs.
  • Confer with managers to determine production requirements, conditions of equipment and supplies, and work schedules.
  • Direct or assist with the adjustment or repair of equipment or machinery.
  • Monitor operations to identify and solve problems, improve work methods, and ensure compliance with safety, company, and government regulations.
  • Plan work schedules according to personnel and equipment availability.
Other Experience and Qualifications
  • 24 months experience as a farm supervisor or in a related supervisory role in agriculture crop production.
  • Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken) required as position will lead a predominately Spanish-speaking workforce.
  • Some knowledge of working with specialty crops like ginseng.
  • In-depth knowledge of ginseng production cycles, farm equipment, and agricultural best practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to train and supervise a diverse, multilingual workforce.
  • Physical stamina and willingness to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Record-keeping skills and proficiency with basic computer programs (like Microsoft Word and Excel) for scheduling, reporting, and compliance tracking.
  • Experience operating agricultural machinery and crop equipment.
