Position Overview

The City of Wauwatosa is looking for their next Civil Engineer! The Civil Engineer performs professional level engineering work in the planning and design of the City’s Street Infrastructure; including streets, storm sewers, alleys, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes. Prepares plans, specifications, and estimates for public construction projects. Designs and oversees implementation of annual sidewalk, pavement marking, crack filling, and seal coat programs.

Collaborates with multi‑disciplinary team on projects including consultants hired by the City, internal construction management staff, and the Department of Public Works (DPW) operations team.

The pay range for this position is $74,855.46–95,658.16 annually, with the starting salary depending on experience and qualifications. Essential Functions
  • Designs public works projects, such as roadways, storm sewer, alleys, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes.
  • Performs calculations and utilizes AutoCAD‑Civil3D for the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the repair, resurfacing, and reconstruction of City streets, alleys, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, parking lots.
  • Coordinates and works closely with city utility engineers, surveyors, and inspectors in the preparation of plans and specifications, and the construction of public works projects.
  • Prepares assessments for paving projects.
  • Manages the planning and design of the City’s annual sidewalk program.
  • Manages the planning and design and oversees the implementation of the City’s annual pavement marking, crack filling, and seal coat programs.
  • Acquires necessary permits from agencies.
  • Works with the traffic engineering team to incorporate signals, signage, and pavement marking improvements into public works projects.
  • Works with the multi‑modal team to identify opportunities where bicycle and pedestrian accommodations can be included on projects.
  • Promotes and maintains positive departmental public relations and image with customers, which include other City departments and staff, contractors, developers, property owners, and the community in general.
Minimum Requirements

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program required.
  • 3 years of related experience.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements
  • A valid Wisconsin Driver’s License is required.
  • Engineer‑In‑Training Certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months from date of hire.
  • Wisconsin Professional Engineer registration preferred.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications

In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Experience in designing public improvements utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D in an urban environment, including roadway modeling.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public works design, drafting, surveying and construction.
  • Knowledge of roadway design engineering manuals, standards, and practices.

While performing the duties of this job, employee performs standard office activity requiring little physical effort; employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
