The Wauwatosa Health Department accepts ongoing applications for students and interns. This is a continuous job posting with no specific Final date to receive applications. This is an unpaid internship that will allow qualified candidates to gain hands‑on experience and meet academic requirements, as needed. The intern will have the opportunity to enhance their education and skills in various areas including public health nursing, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and/or community health.
Internships are primarily in‑person, with some remote flexibility if and when needed. The Health Department’s hours are Monday‑Friday from 8:00 am‑4:30 pm with some opportunities for evening and weekend events and meetings, depending on the internship.
Applications will be accepted continuously but must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the preferred start date.
Internship Opportunities At The Wauwatosa Health Department Include (but Are Not Limited To) The Following, Depending On Department Workload And Capacity- Community health:
- Help plan and support community events
- Assist with outreach to community partners
- Develop materials for public‑facing programs
- Compile community feedback through surveys, short interviews, or event observations
- Communications:
- Develop social media content for various department initiatives
- Create or update infographics and flyers for public education
- Review website and other materials content for clarity, accuracy, and accessibility
- Program evaluation and data:
- Assist with data collection and analysis for program evaluation and community health assessment
- Create visual summaries or infographics for program metrics
- Help compile data for annual reports, grant reports, or performance measures
- Review evidence‑based practices and provide recommendations for program development and improvement
- Public health nursing:
- Learn the role of the public health nurse generalist
- Assist with planning and implementation of community health education programming, including blood pressure screenings, falls prevention, and sexual health
- Provide vaccine education and administration
- Assist in communicable disease investigations
- Social work:
- Help address youth mental health through small groups and community events
- Provide support to our City Social Worker who works across health, police, and fire
The Wauwatosa Health Department does not offer internship opportunities for public health lab work, intensive clinical experiences, or undergraduate social work degrees.
Eligibility- High school diploma or equivalent
- 18 years of age by due date of application
- Current student pursuing a degree in public health, health sciences, social work, communication, or a related field.
- Interest in community health, health equity, and public service.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- Comfort working both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Willingness to learn and take on a variety of tasks.
This is a temporary, unpaid, non‑benefited position.
