Position: Registered Nurse- Med/Surg .9 FTE 1st shift

Primary Functions
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care in accordance with the Iowa Nursing Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Assess, delegate, and coordinate nursing care based on patients’ problems and needs, initiating the nursing process in everyday practice.
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care, observation, and counseling to patients and family, accepting responsibility for the total nursing care of assigned patients.
  • Communicate with providers, managers, and other healthcare team members about changes in patients’ clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology.
  • Assist with the clinical development of other nursing department staff members by serving as a mentor and consultant.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assessment: Systematically collect comprehensive data relevant to the patient’s health, completing accurate initial and ongoing assessments, and discharge assessment data.
  • Diagnosis: Analyze assessment data to determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses.
  • Outcomes Identification/Planning: Develop individualized care plans, initiate a plan on admission, and involve the patient, family, and other healthcare providers in care planning.
  • Implementation: Implement the identified plan safely and timely, ensuring all care is provided according to the individualized care plan and collaborating with other disciplines.
  • Evaluation: Evaluate progress toward outcomes, revise diagnoses, outcomes, and care plans as needed, and document care accurately at the point of care.
  • Professional Practice: Evaluate personal nursing practice in relation to standards and guidelines, seek assistance when appropriate, and maintain a reflective journal in Halogen.
  • Collegiality: Interact and contribute to the professional development of peers, volunteer for committees or projects, and maintain compassionate relationships with colleagues.
  • Research: Integrate evidence and research findings into practice, applying the best available evidence to guide decisions.
  • Charge Nurse: Lead during assigned shifts, anticipate patient and staffing needs, coordinate tasks, and act as a clinical resource for staff.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa. Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred.
  • For Surgical Assistant:
    Must hold either a CNOR or RNFA certification.
  • Proficient in reading, speaking, and writing fluent English.
  • Ability to learn and navigate computer systems, including online training modules, the employee timesheet, the performance appraisal system, and job‑specific systems.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Sitting – Approximately 25% of shift.
    • Standing – Approximately 50% of shift.
    • Walking – Approximately 50% of shift.
    • Lifting – Approximately 35 pounds.
    • Twisting – Infrequent.
    • Bending – Moderate.
    • Squatting/Kneeling – Approximately 25% of shift.
    • Must use proper body mechanics, ergonomics, and, as applicable, lifting/moving devices.
    Work Environment
    • Possible contact with hazardous chemicals or treatment modalities.
    • Potential exposure to communicable diseases inherent in a healthcare environment.
    • Involvement in patient care may result in unavoidable work‑related illnesses.

The position is at‑will and does not constitute an employment contract beyond the at‑will relationship with Waverly Health Center.
