The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking for a decisive people leader with a safety-first mindset to serve as a Garage Operations Assistant (GOA). The role guides a highway maintenance crew to prioritize safety and complete projects that make Iowa roadways safer.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and communicate daily maintenance and administrative operations with supervisor oversight.
  • Perform basic office administration via technical devices and software.
  • Prepare project plans within budgetary limitations.
  • Review maintenance records, material supplies, inventory records, and crew reports.
  • Oversee traffic control for maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate snow operations and operate snow equipment.
  • Assist with grading and paving projects.
Residency

Waverly Maintenance Garage – Employees must reside within a 45‑minute driving time from the assigned work location within five months of hire.

Shift

7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and may include on‑call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions or overnight travel.

Special Requirements
  • Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire.
  • Class A CDL and required endorsements within five months after hire.

Entry‑level driver training is available upon hire to meet state and federal regulations.

  • Successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
  • Pre‑employment physical to verify ability to perform duties.
  • Pre‑employment drug screen and ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing.
  • May need pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as required.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for this position:

  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency and at least four years of full‑time work experience in highway maintenance and equipment operation.
    • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency;
    • At least two years of full‑time work experience in highway maintenance and equipment operation;
    • Two years of education and/or experience where thirty semester hours of accredited course work in construction technology, management, or engineering equates to one year of full‑time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full‑time work as a Highway Technician Associate or Equipment Operator Senior.
  • Positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire. Within a specified timeframe, a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements and mandatory restrictions must be obtained and maintained. In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, this job requires a pre‑employment drug screen and ongoing participation in the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing program.

    A post‑offer pre‑employment physical is required before starting employment. Employees may be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification. Travel, including overnight travel, may be required. Employees must respond to emergency situations and be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
