Building Inspector I: $56,763.84 - $79,469.37
Building Inspector II: $62,582.13 - $87,614.98
Building Inspector I
Under general supervision, enforce compliance with city ordinances and building codes; assist in the review of building plans; provide professional, effective and efficient public service assistance to the general public; and perform other duties as assigned. This position is a part of the Building Safety section of the Building & Community Services Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a multi-incumbent classification and the entry/journey level class in the Building Inspector series. The position is distinguished by its limited responsibility and training-oriented nature. This position collaborates with department administration, other building inspectors, Development Services Departments, developers, builders, subcontractors, owners, architects, and engineers. The employee reports to the Building Inspections Supervisor.
Building Inspector II
Under general supervision, enforce compliance with city ordinances and building codes; that inspects residential and commercial construction projects for compliance with all building, safety and construction codes and regulations, and with the approved building plans; and perform other duties as assigned. This position is a part of the Building Services section of the Building & Community Services Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a multi-incumbent classification and the mid/journey level class in the Building Inspector Series. This position is distinguished by its emphasis on residential inspections and meets state requirements in plumbing inspections. This position reports to the Building Inspections Supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities
Building Inspector I
- Reviews plans and specifications of projects to gain familiarity with the projects prior to inspection; performs field inspections to evaluate the work performed and materials used.
- Enforce all applicable provisions of the International Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical Codes as adopted and amended by local ordinances.
- Perform field inspections of industrial, commercial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to assure conformance with applicable building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes.
- Inspect foundations, concrete, framing, plastering, and a large variety of other complex and routine structural building elements.
- Examine grade, quality, and treatment of lumber, steel, roofing materials, electrical system components; plumbing fixtures, mechanical systems, and related building elements to secure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; review quality of installation and workmanship.
- Inspect complex and simple electrical installations; ensure safety of electrical construction; review quality of materials and workmanship.
- Inspect residential and commercial mechanical, heating, and air conditioning systems.
- Make field reviews of building plans and specifications.
- Conduct follow up inspections as necessary to assure conformance; suspend construction as necessary.
- Confer with architects, contractors, builders, property owners and the general public, both in the field and in the office; explain and interpret code provisions and local building regulations and requirements; respond to citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Complete and maintain a variety of records, reports, documents, and correspondence relating to inspection activity.
- Assist those contacted in the course of duty in an effective, efficient and professional manner.
