Position Overview

TxDOT's Dallas District is seeking a Construction Inspector to join us in the inspection and oversight of essential projects in the North‑Central region.

Depending on skill level, this employee will perform all facets of bridge inspection, roadway inspection, environmental compliance, and materials inspection, serving as Inspector on a range of small‑scale to large‑scale projects. Duties include fieldwork and possible late or night shifts to meet area office needs. The position is located in our Ellis/Navarro Area Office and will support inspection of existing infrastructure and new construction projects.

Salary Range
  • Construction Inspector I – B18: $45,521 – $71,055
  • Construction Inspector II – B19: $48,244 – $76,028

Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Act as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution.
  • May serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects.
  • Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work; requires contact with contractors.
  • Perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites.
  • Calculate payments due to contractors for work completed.
  • Ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitor project phasing and traffic control plans and ensure compliance with approved safety standards; inspect barricades as required; move traffic control devices and barricades.
  • Observe and inspect ongoing construction work.
  • Oversee construction record‑keeping activities; recommend payments to contractors; recommend change orders; review proposed change orders submitted by consultants; prepare reports.
  • Prepare monthly and final estimates.
  • Assist in engineering‑related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
  • Resolve differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Document work progress and issues arising throughout the scope of the project.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Additional duties for Construction Inspector II:
    • Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.
    • Serves as a lead worker or project leader.
    • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.
