Description

As a leader in youth development and healthy living, the Waxahachie Family YMCA is seeking an exemplary, mission-driven leader to serve as a part-time Adaptive Program Coordinator. This position will act as a key conduit for special needs and adaptive programming throughout Ellis County, while being based out of the Waxahachie Family YMCA.

The Adaptive Program Coordinator will be responsible for the planning, development, coordination, and supervision of inclusive and adaptive programs that serve individuals of all abilities. This includes expanding existing offerings such as Angels Swim, Miracle League and Special Olympics partnerships. This leader will also help identifying and building new opportunities that meet the needs of families and individuals with diverse abilities in our community.

In this position, you will collaborate with community partners, families, and organizations across Ellis County to strengthen program awareness and accessibility. You will assist in recruiting, training, and supporting staff and volunteers, help coordinate program schedules, and ensure that equipment and environments are safe, inclusive, and welcoming.

Additionally, you will support program development for evenings, weekends, and seasonal offerings, including family engagement opportunities and special events. This is a highly relational role, and success will depend on your ability to build strong, trusting relationships with participants, caregivers, staff, and community partners.

The person in this position will help ensure implementation of YMCA policies and procedures, including health, safety, and emergency protocols. They will also work collaboratively with other departments to integrate adaptive programming into broader YMCA offerings when appropriate.

Requirements

Applicants must be 21 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, or a related field is preferred.

Must have at least 1 year of experience working with individuals with special needs or disabilities, with a strong understanding of inclusive practices, behavior management strategies, and participant-centered programming. Previous experience in staff or volunteer supervision is preferred.

Candidates will be required to complete all YMCA-required trainings (CPR, First Aid, AED, Child Abuse Prevention, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, New Staff Orientation, etc.).

Applicants should possess strong relationship-building skills, compassion, patience, and a genuine passion for serving individuals of all abilities. A successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, initiative, adaptability, creativity, and strong organizational skills.

They should have the ability to lead and engage participants in recreational and social activities, adapt programming to meet varying needs, and effectively communicate with families and community partners. A basic understanding of group management and program development is essential.

Physical & Scheduling Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs for distances up to 100 yards. This position may require evening and occasional weekend hours to support programming and community engagement efforts.
