Position SummaryWe are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable 1st Grade Teacher to join our team of educators committed to the classical model. The ideal candidate will inspire students through rich literature, history, and science instruction; lead Socratic discussions; and foster a love of learning through a structured and nurturing classroom environment.
Responsibilities- Deliver instruction aligned with the classical model, emphasizing mastery, moral virtue, and intellectual development.
- Teach core content areas: literature, grammar, writing, history (American and classical), mathematics, and science.
- Utilize direct instruction, narration, dictation, copywork, and Socratic questioning techniques.
- Integrate classical works and primary sources into lessons to promote deep understanding and critical thinking.
- Uphold high academic and behavioral expectations rooted in respect, discipline, and self-governance.
- Maintain an orderly and joyful classroom rooted in mutual respect and virtue.
- Regularly assess student progress and differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Collaborate with faculty and administration to support the school’s mission and academic standards.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
- Participate in ongoing professional development in Classical Education philosophy and pedagogy.
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Liberal Arts, or related field
- Valid teaching certification or eligibility for certification in the state of North Carolina
- Passion for Classical Education and the liberal arts tradition
- Excellent classroom management and communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience teaching in a classical or liberal arts education setting
- Familiarity with Core Knowledge, Go Math, or similar content-rich curricula
- Understanding of classical authors, historical texts, and moral philosophy
- Training in classical methodologies such as the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric)
- A heart for children and a belief in their potential to pursue truth and virtue
- Intellectual curiosity and humility
