High School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher

The High School English Language Arts Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. The teacher creates a positive learning environment, develops lesson plans aligned with the Michigan Academic Standards, assesses student progress, and collaborates with colleagues, parents, and administrators to support student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instruction and Curriculum:
    Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the Michigan Academic Standards for English Language Arts. Teach courses such as English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12, Advanced Placement (AP) English, and elective English courses as assigned. Foster students' literacy development through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language instruction. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and technology to meet diverse student learning needs.

    Promote critical thinking, analytical reading, research, and effective communication skills. Differentiate instruction to accommodate individual student abilities and learning styles.
  • Assessment and Student Progress:
    Assess and monitor student achievement using formative and summative assessments. Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and student performance. Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents regarding academic progress. Analyze assessment data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Classroom Management:
    Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment. Implement effective classroom management strategies that promote student engagement and responsibility. Enforce school policies, procedures, and student conduct expectations.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, counselors, and support staff to support student achievement. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns. Participate in department meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, and school improvement initiatives. Assist with curriculum development and departmental planning.

Professional Responsibilities:
Maintain compliance with district policies, state regulations, and professional standards. Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities. Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information. Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree in English, English Education, Secondary Education, or a related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Certification:
    Valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate secondary English Language Arts endorsement required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Michigan Academic Standards and secondary ELA curriculum.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively integrate instructional technology into classroom learning.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and classroom supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to operate standard classroom and office technology.
  • Work Environment:

    • School-based setting with frequent interaction with students, staff, parents, and community members.
    • Participation in occasional evening events, conferences, and extracurricular activities may be required.

    Terms of Employment:

    • School-year position in accordance with the district's negotiated collective bargaining agreement, board policies, and administrative guidelines. Salary and benefits as established by the district and applicable agreements.
