Overview

Job Summary:

Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, the role is to maintain a secure and orderly environment and protection of the grounds and off-site buildings for Corewell Health, including the safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. The position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification and may include authority to arrest for misdemeanors offenses, in accordance with Michigan PA 330 certification requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol campus on foot and in vehicle (or on bike as assigned).
  • Assist with unlocking doors inside or performing motor assists outside; remain observant of suspicious activities and security violations.
  • Accept and perform duties at assigned posts; assist patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Enforce hospital rules, regulations, and policies as appropriate.
  • Support Security Operations Center activities by monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
  • Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding safety, security performance, improvement strategies/initiatives, and compliance issues as required.
  • Complete assigned or self-generated reports or logs daily on activities, irregularities, investigations; log all calls and lost articles, and send reports to managers and executives.
  • Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off-site locations; prepare reports and evaluate pertinent data and documentation.
  • Co-operate with law enforcement on complaints; provide security escorts and assistance as conditions warrant.
  • Respond to routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas; prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Use proactive non-violent verbal de-escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors without escalation into violence.
  • Assist nursing staff with physical management/restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
  • In dealing with non-patient aggressors, use defensive tactics and applicable force continuum to safeguard lives and well-being of staff, patients, and visitors as necessary.
  • May be required to possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons in conjunction with the force continuum as determined by policy.
  • Provide CPR/first aid in medical emergencies on grounds or in public areas until trained medical staff arrive from the Emergency Department or local fire department, as per EMTALA law.
  • Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR’s/Tyvek suits and maintaining order in the decontamination area.
  • Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards; inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with regular drills and emergencies.
  • Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
  • At locations where PA 330 is in place, utilize Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health Property under Michigan Law (PA 330) and exercise citation/ticket writing and ordinance enforcement authority under PA 330 and local ordinances.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two to three years’ law-enforcement related work experience (police officer, hospital or corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police).
  • Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or dangerous incidents.
  • Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use requires approval by the Director and a current Carry Pistol License (CPL) with completion of the specialized Taser Training Course.
  • Driver’s License - State of Michigan (license required upon hire).
  • CRT-BLS (Basic Life Support) from American Heart Association within 90 days.
  • CRT-AED within 90 days; CRT-First Aid within 90 days.
  • Preferred:
    Graduation from a state-regulated Police Academy; other experience related to crowd control and security may be considered.
