Assistant Professor Of Special Education / Teacher Of Students With Disabilities
William Paterson University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, 10-month position of Assistant Professor of Special Education / Teacher of Students with Disabilities in the College of Education, Department of Special Education, Professional Counseling and Disability Studies. Position starts January 2026.
The Department of Special Education, Professional Counseling and Disability Studies offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates across various disciplines. The Special Education program offers certificates and degrees for educators to enhance their careers with endorsements related to the provision of special education for students with identified disabilities. This Assistant Professor will predominantly teach undergraduate and graduate level courses leading to the endorsement for the New Jersey Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD).
The position includes a 24-credit annual teaching load. Undergraduate TSD courses are taught in in-person, hybrid, and online formats in 15-week sessions. Graduate TSD courses are taught in an asynchronous online format in 7-week sessions. This faculty member may also teach courses in the department's Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) certificate and master's degree programs, which run in online and hybrid formats in 15-week sessions.
Annual reappointment during the pre-tenure period, promotion, and tenure are determined by university and department standards for effectiveness and excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teaching
- Teach 24 credits annually of undergraduate and graduate courses in in-person, hybrid, and online formats.
- Provide students with consistent and effective advisement, support and guidance in their academic endeavors.
Service
- Coordinate program and work with department faculty on course updates to align with New Jersey Department of Education and professional accreditation guidelines.
- Attend department and college meetings and participate in activities and events of the department, college, and university designed for student recruitment, retention and graduation.
- Contribute to assurance of learning assessment and accreditation activities as well as curriculum and program development.
- Serve on department, College of Education, and University committees and councils.
Scholarship
- Participate in ongoing professional development and academic engagement in one's field and discipline;
- Disseminate findings via scholarly publication and presentation/grant activities.
Qualifications
Required
- Earned doctorate in Special Education or related field; ABD considered; terminal degree must be completed before consideration for renewal for the second year (March).
- Standard certification as a NJ Teacher of Students with Disabilities/ Teacher of the Handicapped (or eligible for standard NJ certification).
- Experience in the special education classroom as the lead teacher.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses on a variety of special education topics.
- Demonstrated ongoing research agenda on special education topics.
Preferred
- Experience in NJ public schools.
- Experience in supervision of novice educators.
- Experience with asynchronous online and hybrid teaching and learning formats.
- Experience as a leader, mentor, and/or professional development provider on a variety of special education topics.
- Publications on key special education topics.

AFT Salary Grade 24 - $73,899.90 - $
