Title

Head Custodian

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred:
    Five years of skilled custodial experience.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license with satisfactory record.
  • Required criminal background check.
  • Low Pressure Boiler License required.
Reports To

Custodial Supervisor, Director of Facilities Management, or designee.

Job Goal

Under supervision of the Custodial Supervisor and in consultation with the School Principal, the Head Custodian completes daily custodial duties and responsibilities for district facilities, ensuring a healthy, safe, and efficiently operated school environment.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment to prepare meetings, classroom activities, and events.
  • Assemble furniture and equipment for efficient task completion.
  • Clean assigned school facilities (classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, patios, grounds, etc.) and direct custodial staff to do the same.
  • Evaluate situations involving staff, students, parents, or the public for appropriate action or referral.
  • Facilitate meetings (safety, in‑service) to convey information on new or improved procedures.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment (grounds, buildings, lighting, fire suppression, playgrounds, etc.) to ensure safety, cleanliness, and identify necessary repairs.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment (cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.).
  • Oversee assigned custodial staff: assign tasks, train, review work, recommend improvements.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations (open gates, access doors, disarm security systems, raise flag, set crosswalk signs, make minor repairs).
  • Prepare grounds around school building for safe and attractive areas.
  • Submit work orders for supplies, equipment, maintenance, and groundskeeping support; monitor status.
  • Receive supplies, verify quality/quantity, make minor repairs to furniture, equipment, fixtures (plumbing, electrical, sheet rock, tile, lockers, etc.).
  • Respond to safety/operational concerns (facility damage, injured students, alarms, etc.).
  • Secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage and liability.
  • Transport items (mail, supplies, equipment, furniture, etc.) within the school site.
  • Assist other personnel to ensure an efficient work environment.
Other Tasks
  • Open the building each day and check heating/cooling systems.
  • Inspect exterior for unauthorized entrances or vandalism.
  • Mop dusted halls and clean entrance mats throughout the day.
  • Punch up paper and debris from inside the building, parking areas, and grounds.
  • Sweep entrance ways.
  • Make minor repairs and replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Keep mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, boiler rooms, and custodial closets clean and organized.
  • Cleans up after sick students.
  • Set up and move furniture and equipment for daily operations, summer cleaning, and special events.
  • Assist in receiving and moving deliveries of storeroom materials.
  • Perform duties in the cafeteria as directed.
  • Handle emergencies and other work as directed by the Building Principal or Administrator.
  • Restock restrooms throughout the day.
Other Duties

Perform any duties and responsibilities within the scope of employment assigned by the Director of Facilities Management or designee, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education. This position is part of the Wayne Custodial‑Maintenance Association. Stipend allowances per the Director of Facilities Management.

Annual Evaluation

Performance evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on the evaluation of non‑certificated staff.

Physical Requirements
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Sit, stand, and walk for required periods.
  • Speak and hear.
  • Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Communicate effectively in English; ASL or Braille may also be considered.
  • Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers for tools and controls.
  • Climb ladders of various sizes.
Environmental Demands
  • Exposure to a variety of child and adult diseases.
  • Exposure to weather conditions.
  • Exposure to heated/air‑conditioned and ventilated facilities.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals used for instruction, equipment, or operation.
  • Workplace is usually moderately quiet but can be noisy.
