Summary:

* + The Phlebotomy Supervisor provides daily leadership and operational oversight of the inpatient phlebotomy team. This role is responsible for staffing coordination, scheduling, performance management, and ensuring consistent achievement of service quality standards, patient experience goals, and departmental expectations. The Supervisor partners closely with the Director, Manager, and Human Resources to support talent management initiatives, ensure the fair and consistent application of policies, and coach and guide staff through performance evaluations, corrective action processes, and professional development planning.

The Supervisor must demonstrate agility and adaptability in managing dynamic clinical operations, responding promptly to shifting priorities, fluctuating volumes, and evolving workflow demands. This role is instrumental in fostering team accountability, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment, and reinforcing Penn Medicine's values and standards. The Supervisor ensures staff remain engaged, properly trained, and equipped to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

+ Operations:
Oversee inpatient phlebotomy operations for a 24/7 service, ensuring timely and accurate blood collection across all hospital units. Monitor turnaround times, workflow efficiency, productivity, and overall service performance to maintain high-quality standards.

Ensure compliance with departmental procedures, documentation standards, regulatory requirements, safety policies, and infection control practices. Enforce proper patient identification and specimen labeling procedures to protect patient safety and specimen integrity. Investigate errors and incidents, manage reporting and follow-up, escalate significant concerns to management, and implement corrective actions. Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance operational performance and patient care.

Provide leadership and workforce management support by interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and validating competencies of new staff members. Develop work schedules, manage staffing levels, and adjust assignments in real time to meet changing patient volumes and operational priorities. Conduct performance evaluations and deliver ongoing coaching and feedback to promote professionalism, accountability, quality, and excellent customer service.

Collaborate with nursing staff and providers to maintain strong working relationships and gather real-time operational feedback. Monitor inventory and order phlebotomy equipment and supplies to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

Prepare and analyze reports related to productivity, quality metrics, and staffing. Assist with budgeting and cost control initiatives.
