Drafter
This role focuses on designing detailed plans using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to support engineering and manufacturing projects. The drafter works from rough sketches and specifications created by engineers and transforms them into precise drawings and models. The position helps design products that can be efficiently manufactured by applying sound engineering and manufacturing techniques, particularly within a full-service custom fabrication and machining environment.
Responsibilities- Create detailed design plans and drawings using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software.
- Interpret and develop rough sketches, concepts, and specifications provided by engineers into accurate and complete drafting documents.
- Prepare structural designs and layouts, with a focus on structural steel components and assemblies.
- Produce 3D models and detailed drawings using AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and related drafting tools.
- Incorporate engineering and manufacturing techniques into designs to ensure products are practical, manufacturable, and meet project requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering and shop personnel to clarify design intent, resolve issues, and ensure drawings align with fabrication and machining capabilities.
- Support steel detailing activities by creating precise shop drawings, part details, and assembly drawings.
- Review and revise drawings as needed to reflect design changes, feedback, and improvements.
- Maintain organized drawing files and documentation in accordance with company standards and project requirements.
- Contribute to projects across both large and small-scale custom fabrication and machining work.
- 2–5 years of experience in drafting, preferably in structural design and structural steel applications.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor for 3D modeling and drafting.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for 2D and 3D drafting.
- Experience with steel detailing, including structural steel components and assemblies.
- Ability to interpret and translate rough sketches and engineering specifications into accurate drawings.
- Strong understanding of drafting standards, dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication requirements.
- Associates degree from a technical school or a high school diploma.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in creating and revising drawings.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, fabricators, and other team members.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a full-service manufacturing environment that includes custom fabrication and machining.
- Familiarity with powder and industrial coating processes for both large and small-scale projects.
- Strong problem-solving skills to incorporate engineering and manufacturing techniques into practical designs.
- Ability to manage multiple drawing assignments and adapt to changing project priorities.
- Effective communication skills to discuss design requirements and clarify technical details with cross-functional teams.
This position is based in a full-service manufacturing facility that specializes in custom fabrication and machining, including powder and industrial coating on both large and small-scale projects. The drafter spends approximately 15–20% of their time on the shop floor, collaborating with production teams and reviewing work in progress. While on the shop floor, steel-toe footwear and safety glasses are required as part of the safety dress code.
The team is relatively small, with close collaboration among a core group of drafting and engineering professionals. The role offers vacation and holiday pay, contributing to a supportive and stable work environment.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Waynesboro, PA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.46/hr.
