Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The teacher creates a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for students with disabilities, so that students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports.
- Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual motor skills, language, cognition, and social skills.
- Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi‑sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and meet students’ varying needs and interests.
- Teach socially acceptable behavior as determined by students’ IEPs, employing techniques within an overall positive behavioral support framework.
- Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based on a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures to maintain a safe learning environment for all.
- Meet with parents to discuss progress, determine priorities, and collaborate on individualized educational plans.
- Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote educational, physical, social, and emotional growth.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on students and activities as required by law, district policy, and administrative standards.
- Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow‑up of students in the inclusive classroom.
- Provide crisis/behavior intervention, as needed.
- Assist in data collection to inform appropriate classroom interventions.
- Implement effective instructional strategies that result in measurable student academic progress.
- Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements within the special education program.
- Collaboratively develop short‑ and long‑range goals for each student’s IEP.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers of regular‑class students to interpret abilities and disabilities and assist students with regular‑class assignments.
- Supervise and manage paraprofessional staff assigned to students or the special education program.
- Develop and implement specific educational plans for students whose additional instructional support cannot be met within the regular classroom setting.
- Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities and curriculum meetings, and demonstrate continuing professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
- Collegiate Professional Certificate with a Special Education endorsement for General Curriculum.
- Preferred two years of experience as a special education teacher.
- Knowledge of the medical aspects of students with disabilities and their implications for instruction.
- Knowledge of resources and techniques needed to integrate special education students into the least restrictive environment.
Must have the use of sensory skills to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and parents. The position requires significant walking, bending, standing, stooping, and possible physical interventions to maintain a safe learning environment. The employee may be required to move students or equipment up to 50 lbs, position students in specialized equipment, or change diapers as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to support performance of essential tasks.
Termsof Employment
200‑day contract. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
