Automation Technician – Process Controls & Field Automation

Location: Weatherford, OK & Surrounding Region

Job Type: Full-Time

Compensation: Competitive Pay, DOE + Benefits + Vehicle

Travel: Daily travel to field locations throughout the western OK region

Reporting To: VP, Automation

About the Role:

Thurmond is looking for a hands-on Automation Technician who enjoys troubleshooting problems and understands how mechanical equipment, instrumentation, electrical systems, and process controls work together. You do not have to come from the oil & gas industry to be successful in this role. Experience in industrial controls, HVAC controls, instrumentation, electrical systems, or industrial maintenance can provide an excellent foundation. You'll install, troubleshoot, configure, and commission automation and control systems at customer locations throughout Western Oklahoma.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and commission automation and process control systems.
  • Troubleshoot PLCs, RTUs, flow computers, HMIs, remote I/O, sensors, transmitters, and control valves.
  • Diagnose issues involving pressure, temperature, level, flow, and other process instrumentation.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, loop drawings, and control diagrams.
  • Troubleshoot communications including Ethernet, cellular, radio, and SCADA/telemetry systems.
  • Perform loop checks, startup, commissioning, and functional testing.
  • Work with field technicians, vendors, and customers to complete projects safely and efficiently.
  • Document work performed and communicate field issues, material needs, and scope changes.
  • Provide technical support and help mentor less-experienced technicians.

What We're Looking For:

We are looking for technical problem solvers—not necessarily someone with a specific industry background.

  • Hands-on experience with electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, or control systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand how equipment and processes work.
  • Ability to troubleshoot logically and identify root causes.
  • Ability to read schematics, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, or control drawings.
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, sensors, switches, relays, and control devices.
  • Comfortable using computers and software to configure and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently in the field.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Willingness to travel daily to field locations.

Preferred Experience:

  • Oil & gas automation or production equipment
  • ABB Totalflow / PCCU
  • PLCs, RTUs, SCADA, HMI, or telemetry
  • Process instrumentation and calibration
  • Industrial communications
  • VFDs, motor controls, or control panels
  • HVAC controls or building automation
  • Gas measurement or flow computers

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in outdoor and industrial environments, including exposure to heat, cold, dust, and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in various positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment, tools, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds
    .
  • Ability to safely access and work around equipment, piping, electrical systems, and other industrial facilities.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

The ideal candidate is curious, mechanically minded, and willing to get their hands dirty. You don't have to know every control system on day one—you need to be willing to learn, think through problems, and take ownership of getting the job done.
