About the Position
Writing tutors help students with the writing process and not with editing papers. Writing Center tutors may work one‑on‑one or with small groups on every aspect of the writing process, including organization, outlining, grammar, punctuation, style, and citation (APA & MLA). Tutors provide assistance for a broad range of academic activities: assigned papers, creative work, laboratory reports, research papers, and cover letters for internships or jobs.
Upon request, tutors work with college instructors to provide special assistance to groups and individuals in writing and critical reading. Tutors may also work regularly with students who speak English as a second language or students with special needs or circumstances.
Security sensitive position requiring a satisfactory criminal history background check.
Males between the ages of 18 through 25 must be properly registered with the Selective Service System to be eligible for employment.
Responsibilities- Support staff colleagues in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the Writing Center.
- Maintain confidentiality of students and services.
- Be dependable, punctual, and complete assigned tasks.
- Notify the campus dean of conflicts or problems.
- Provide tutoring to members of the Wise campus community.
- Prepare written reports of each tutoring session.
- Maintain orderliness and operation of the Center.
- Notify the campus dean of needs or difficulties.
- Provide input and suggestions to improve Writing Center operations.
- Other tasks as assigned by the campus dean.
- Demonstrated significant writing ability.
- Knowledge of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essay structure.
- Good understanding of grammar mechanics.
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a writing intensive program.
- Experience tutoring college‑level students and developmental education.
- Treat all persons with respect, dignity, and justice regardless of protected characteristics.
- Exercise the highest professional and ethical standards.
- Communicate verbally and in writing with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
