Transportation Maintenance Technician I/II (2601405)

Position:
Transportation Maintenance Technician I or II (A16/A17) in the Fort Worth District of TxDOT. This role is based in Weatherford, Parker/Weatherford Ae/Maint. Salary ranges from $40,918 to $64,469 per year, depending on level and experience. The position is full‑time, non‑exempt, and requires weekday day shift with occasional weekend and holiday work, plus 24‑hour on‑call duties during emergencies.

Essential Duties – Tech I
  • Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way, performs roadway repairs, erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs, and hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates light equipment such as front‑end loaders up to 1¼ cubic yards, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; completes required reports (time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms).
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, assists the public, and performs additional tasks during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties – Tech II

Assists with traffic control, places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic; inspects barricades and construction materials; operates heavy equipment including motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, profiling mills, large dragline, shovel, paint stripers, and dump truck; performs preventive maintenance and reporting same as Tech I; and performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: None specified.
  • Experience: Tech I – No work experience required;
    Tech II – 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related field.
  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license; must obtain Commercial Class “A” CDL with “N” endorsement within 120 days of employment. Military/veteran candidates must obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days.
  • Completion of CDL training provided at no cost, with lodging, transportation, and per diem if required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Prior experience operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments and prepare confidential records.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Required to wear protective gear, including respirator, hard hat, steel‑toed boots, and other equipment. Work may involve extreme cold or heat, noise, vibration, moving vehicles, high places, chemicals and atmospheric conditions. Medium physical work: lift up to 50 lbs, frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, hearing and visual acuity for operating vehicles and equipment. A pre‑employment physical and random drug testing (for safety positions) is required.

Must be able to respond within 60 minutes on a 24‑hour basis and work weekends, holidays, evenings and inclement weather.
