The Patient Safety Observer is responsible for providing continuous safety observation of patients to which they are assigned. The primary function of this role is to ensure patient safety and comfort. As part of the care team, the Patient Observer may be asked to support patients with activities of daily living, such as ambulating, feeding, and repositioning as directed by nursing.
The observer may engage with patients using casual talk, sensory activities, and may document and report all concerns to the licensed clinical charge person.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain good human relations skills, introduce self by name, engage in eye contact, and consistently display a respectful, empathetic, and caring attitude toward patients and their families.Consistently observe for suicidal and/or violent behavior, staying in close proximity and keeping the patient in the visual field at all times, including bathrooms and transfers.Monitor visitors to ensure no unsafe materials are shared with the patient (e.g., weapons, illicit drugs, sharps).Maintain 15‑minute checks with documentation unless otherwise directed.Observe more than one patient if deemed appropriate by licensed staff in charge.Follow the directions of the nurse in charge.Transport patients if directed by the licensed staff in charge.When not observing a patient, perform ancillary activities per nursing supervisor instructions (making beds, stocking, assisting with patient transport).Function as a float position and be assigned to areas with patient needs.Maintain patient dignity at all times and advocate for the patient.Qualifications
License/Certification/
Education Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.CPR Certification within 6 months of hire.Experience/Skills Preferred:
Previous position held in a healthcare setting.Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the responsibilities listed above may be substituted.
